Question about Disney Dollars

We won't be going to WDW until Spring of 2008, but I was thinking of giving each of the kids some Disney dollars this Easter, also some for their birthdays, and some for Christmas. That way they'll each have some spending money of their own next year when we go.

My question is: Do they expire? If so, it would be pointless to get them now, and we should just wait until next year.

as far as i know they dont expire because u can only use them there... a friend of mine used disney money that she bought on her second trip (back in 2005) tand used it on her recent trip.... by the way i think its a great idea what ur doing! have fun

The Disney Dollars do not expire. The Visa Disney Rewards card is the only one I know of that you have to be careful with because once you put your reward dollars on the card they will expire within one to two years. I haven't done this yet so I am not exactly sure. The Disney dollars are fun the only con is that if they are lost it is just like losing real cash and can not be replaced.

Since booking our Sept. 2007 trip I have tried to keep $20 in Disney Dollars on hand. My son earns them with good deeds. Everytime he does something above and beyond he gets a reward, which differs depending on what he does. So far he has $46.00 put back for our trip and we'll continue all the way up til we leave. He is having a blast counting his $.

We have done this with our daughter for our upcoming trip. Between the money we have given her and the money other family members have given her the kid has about $150 put aside for spending money!

We did this for our kids last year too. We went to the dollar store and bought poster boards and 2 different color stars on for each kid. And they earned stars for different things they did and glued them to the board. I kept up with what i owed them that way. Then they can count how much they earned. We plan on going in 2008 summer so i plan on doing the same thing. They enjoyed it.

My kids got Disney Gift cards in their stocking from Santa, and we get them Disney Dollars for their b-day's, easter baskets, anything else that happens while we are planning a trip to WDW. It is a great way to save money.
Just note that with Disney dollars you have to treat them just like cash...if they are lost or stolen they can not be replaced. If you get a Disney Gift card you can keep your reciept of where you bought them and if anything happens you can have it replaced.

That's a great behavior reward! DH bought some Disney $$ for each of the girls for the upcoming trip so they can have some control on what to buy at the parks. A few weeks ago I found a stash of Dis$$ that still had Mickey on them...circulation date is about 1988-1990. I can only guess that they were left over from one of several trips to DL when I was still living in CA...possibly a Grad Nite souvie that I forgot I had! I know they're spendable, but I'm keeping some back...too cute to pass up putting in the scrapbook!

I found some Toys-R-Us dollars in the stash too...I'm just rollin' in the dough, huh?

Is there any way to purchase these without going to the disney store?

You used to be able to get them by mail at disney.com. A few years back my mom ordered them from there - I think there's a small shipping fee. We always switch all allowance/gifts/tooth fairy money/etc to Disney Dollars when we have a trip coming up. And if the kids have any left after one trip, they save it til the next! They are shovelling snow for Disney Dollars today!!

I purchase Disney dollars each year we go to DW. I purchase them in $1.00 increments. I have 3 children, 2 of which are old enough to get there own spending $. So I give them each $20.00 per day (all in singles) to spend.
When you purchase them at the disney store, they will also ask you how many envelopes you want so I get enough for each child for every day were there. Since my kids are 12 and 6, I divide the money up each day for them and give them one envelope every morning before we head out to the parks.

I choose to give them single dollars because when you purchase something, you will not get disney dollars back. They will give you change in regular money, I thought that beat the purpose of buying them.

Also, no the dollars don't expire. However, they do have limited ones sometimes so you might want to keep one for collections sake. I have one with Mickey and Dumbo. Right now I think they have Goofy.

I have also heard alot of people who had a hard time using the disney gift card. Not many stands take them and when the Disney stores were sold, you could only use the gift card at a hand full of places in Downtown only. I don't know if that's changed or not.

We started doing something similar two weeks ago. DS3 and DS4 both have "chore charts" that we put stickers on. 10 stickers = $1.00. They know that when they earn the money, they have to put the money up for Disney. I bought them each wallets to put it in so they get a kick out of having a wallet just like Daddy. I have noticed that it is already teaching them to save and work hard for what you have. We were at Wal-Mart the other day and they saw a dinosaur toy and my DS4 said, "We have to save our money so we can get that." I was so proud.

When we were planning our trip last year, our grandsons would do small chores,and we had a envie on the refrigertor with their names on them and emblelished them with Disney stickers and had Disney $$ written on it, then when we got to our resort, my daughter cashed them in for the real Disney Dollars. They really enjoyed that. Unfortuantely we no longer have a Disney Store near us.
