Question about cross border shopping and masks

Now that the borders are open for all vaccinated Canadians and soon no return PCR test required for a trip less than 72hrs, I'm both excited and anxious to travel again.

We usually cross over at Sarnia to Port Huron, Michigan for a couple of days and my husband is concerned since there is no mask mandate in Michigan, if we wear our masks because we want some extra protection, we will be criticized by some and possibly attacked? Full disclosure we've always felt safe over there before covid.

Has anyone been over recently and worn their mask with any issues?

Im asking here in hopes of easing his fears because if I can't get him to go to Michigan it will be near to impossible getting him to travel to Florida next year.

We are down in South Carolina right now. I would say that about 75% of people are wearing masks in stores. All employees I've seen were wearing masks and most shoppers. It seems to be okay to wear whatever you want.

I'm in WV in an area where very few people are wearing masks out and about. The only places requiring masks around here are schools, the hospital, and doctors offices. I do wear a mask when out shopping and nobody has said anything to me. I think most people are at the point that they do what they want to do with mask wearing and aren't worrying about what someone else is doing.

I must say I’m relieved to hear these answers. We’re going for Christmas and I’ve been trying out new masks at school because I am thinking I’ll likely wear one even outside when it’s super crowded. I’ve also been concerned about whether or not people will give me a hassle for wearing one. Funny how I went from thinking ‘I’ll never pay to go on holiday if I have to wear a mask‘ to ‘get me outta here, I really want to go on a holiday’.

No. Many in Michigan still wear masks, indoors, and there a few Florida do as well. Not many, but no one blinks an eye at anyone wearing a mask, or not.

This is good to know. I am surprised businesses are not required. I have to admit since only vaccinated can dine indoors in Ontario has given us a sense of calm and relief. As for Michigan we may just get take out if we find the restaurants are too busy.

Ontario might drop the indoor masks too come Spring, at least that is the plan right now. So eventually there will be no mask, but I’m sure some will wear them for a while even after the requirement ends. I don’t think whether here or the US it really matters, if you want to wear one, do it - I doubt most people pay attention. If it was the other way around and the requirement was there and you chose not to wear a mask, then I could see more of a chance of being “harassed” about it in the US.
We are probably in the last stretch of mask wearing being mandated, but as I said, nobody will tell you to take your mask off if you choose to wear one longer.

I was pleasantly surprized in Orlando a few weeks ago that I'd say 80% of people in stores (off Disney property) were wearing masks. I did find it funny tho that when we went to eat at Cheesecake Factory, the sign on their door asks that "unvaccinated people keep their masks on unless seated". So of course we are double vaccinated, but keeping our masks on inside unless at our booth - so did people think we were unvaccinated!?!?

I would have the same thoughts as you did!

I am actually hoping that the mask requirements in Orlando are kept, at least until we finish our March break trip there. I don’t want us to be the only ones still wearing masks. I don’t think I’m ready to stop wearing them anytime soon, even if they remove the requirement.
