Question about child's menu

We are going to Disney in December, not on the dining plan.

I have 3 kids, 8, 9, 10.

I know that Disney has changed the children's menus to be for ages 3-9. If we are eating somewhere that my oldest DS wouldn't like something off the adult menu, can he still order from the kid's menu? Do they ask how old your child is?

My kids ages 11 and 14 usually look at both menus. We have had no problems with them ordering off the kids menu if there was nothing on the adult menu they liked... but from what i've read on these boards it's not always the case...

My 11 year old frequently orders from the kid's menu. I have, too.
