Question about changing a reservation

We are thinking of switching resorts for a trip in Jan. We currently have a reservation at AKV, but since we will be there for 12 days this summer, and we are new to DVC (our Jan. trip will be our third DVC stay) we are thinking of trying BWV. Our 7 month window will open soon. I have enough available points to not cancel the AKV reservation right away and make a BWV reservation. (if there is availability)

Can I do that? when I call can I ask not to cancel my AKV reservation until I secure a BWV reservation, at which time I will cancel AKV?

I have read stories here of members being on the phone and having there suddenly be no availability and with their original reservation canceled, not being able to get back to the original reservation either. Thanks for any input and I hope this all makes sense.

If you have enough points in your Use Year to book both without borrowing, I would do that.

I am someone whose reservation had been lost. Now, if I want to change I ask how many of the new villas there are and make my decision based on that. Of course, if you have enough current UY points to hold them both, fine, I'm not in that position most of the time...I'm fully borrowed!

We just did an add on in May so that is why we have enough current points. I don't expect that to happen often!
