The other day, i was driving in my car, listening to the cd player and it just stopped in the middle of a song..i tried to play it again and it was pretty much like it was frozen..i tried another cd and the same thing happened..

does anyone know what could cause this? just trying to get an idea-thanks

OMG!! I've been meaning to post this. The EXACT same thing happened to me the other day. I didn't hit any bumps or anything and the CD just started skipping. So I tried to eject it and it ate it pretty much. It didn't eject the CD and the spot that it was in is showing empty. The other 5 discs seemed to be working for a few days, but now they're all stuck. I need to call my mechanic and find out what to do/where to go. I'm pretty sure someone's going to need to remove my dash to even get to it. Sounds like an expensive job. :furious:

I assume in both cases it still has power?

If so, then it sounds like the disc sensor got offline or you lost the motor. Most players have a manual eject, just look in the manual for it. Then see if you can get a different disc to play. Sometimes the sensor will get back online by simply going through a disc load.

If after the disc load you hear the motor kick in for a short burst, then it's the sensor. The sensor has to be working for it to get any further. The good news is it's usually an easy fix.

The same type of thing that happened to Beth76 happened to me with my brand NEW car about 2 yrs ago. It was a ford focus (we owned for about 12 m) and I took it to the mechanic who had to take the whole unit out to replace it.

Of course that didn't solve the problem so a new unit was shipped in (but i had a hole in my console for 2 weeks...) and it was replaced again.

The second time the cd player worked.

I got pregnant with DD#2 very shortly after we replaced the whole thing so we moved to a minivan. I don't know if there were any problems after...

Good luck with your car....

Oh, I meant to mention...we didn't pay a thing. Ford has a not so great record with the Focus....

Yeah. Mine does. It actually was playing other discs (in different slots) for a few days. Then today, it "ate" one of those. Whenever I push a button I can hear things moving around in there. It does that for a few seconds and then turns off.

Fantastic. Well seeing as I'm not under warranty anymore, I'm sure this will cost a pretty penny. :sad2:

Is it a Focus? If it is I would take it in and became a total PITA until they fixed it.

I had sooooo many things happen with my car (my quarter panel window shattering, my sun roof NOT opening/closing...etc) that I ended up finding a great Ford dealership/mechanic (that we didn't buy from, unfortunately) to fix all these problems.

I'm sorry you have problems with your car. You would think for a couple thousand dollars they would guarantee something :confused3

No it's an Infiniti. So I'm really ticked.

Had a similar sounding problem this summer and my changer had to be replaced (fortunately I was still under warranty). I have a 4 CD changer and first it only affected one CD but over time it spread to a 2nd - but intermittently.
Hey - this may be a good time to upgrade your sound system if you were thinking about doing it ;) .
Good luck!

Well perhaps not at this exact moment since my A/C seems to be shooting craps this morning. :guilty: I guess I'm going to be stuck listening to tapes for awhile. :rotfl:

Thanks all!
It worked for a few minutes this morning and then it just stopped..i have no clue what is going on..it works and stops...

Have you tried one of the cleaning discs you can buy? Sounds more like a sensor issue but it also might be a dirty lens.

Maybe yours is different, but I believe most changers actually use the same player for each disc.

Still sounds like the sensor is loose. As soon as the sensor incorrectly reads the disc has been taken out, the player stops working. This happens more often in changers because of the increased number of movement and moving parts.

Most of the department or electronics stores have them. Best Buy, Target, Circuit City. The are essentially a small brush attached to a CD. You insert the CD and the brushes clean the laser lens as the CD spins.

Not sure that is the problem, but it's worth a try.
