So I have never flown southwest before. But my understanding is that you can book a flight, and cancel it if needed, and you will get credit towards a flight thats good for a year? Is that right? I have read about people cancelling regular fare to book a DING fare. COuld someone please clarify?

THanks!

Yes, if you cancel, the money you paid is held as a credit that you can use up to one year from the date of original booking. So if you book on May 1, 2010 for a flight on June 1, 2010, then cancel, that credit must be used before April 30, 2011. Whatever travel you book using that credit must be *complete* by 4/30/2011.

The credit remains attached to your confirmation number.

If you book a ticket and there is a lower fare offered through their Ding program, you have to cancel and rebook at the lower fare. You will apply the funds from the original ticket and have credit leftover since the Ding fare is lower.

Yep you can cancel a SW flight and you receive a credit at no charge. Your credit is good for 1 year from the date of booking, not flight. Done it many, many times when prices dropped or I got a DING!
