Question About Breeders

We are picking up the new puppy tonight and I wanted to find out how it usually goes. Should she give us something saying that if the puppy is sick we have the right to bring the puppy back (not that we would) and get a refund within 7 days? Should it say something about her paying for the vet bills should something be wrong?

I would think that anything like that would be spelled out in the contract. I don't know about covering vet bills. I do think that if there is something "wrong" with the dog, at any point, and you want to get rid of it, that the breeder would want you to give it back to her.

I thought this was gonna be a childless by choice thread. :rotfl2:

most reputable breeders would take the dog back at any time during the course of their life, sick or not. I would imagine that they would have volunteered this information to you, if not ask.

We have used two golden retriever breeders in the past. We had contracts with both and that was their standard procedure. It stipulated that they would take the puppy back for any reason. Our first golden had to have surgery for his intestines telescoping and the breeder paid for this and nursed him back to health. This did happen in the first few days after we got him. She offered us another puppy, but we were hooked on this guy from the moment he came into our house.

It epends on the breeder. As stated above, a reputable breeder will take a dog back at any time, for any reason. Depending on the circumstances, you may or may not get any $$ back.

As for vet bills...generally only those for certain problems would be covered and only for a certain amount of time and then, maybe only a portion of the bill.

A reputable breeder will do everything within their power to produce healthy pups. And will be reasonable in giving a health guarantee. But, as buyers, we have to remember that we aren't talking about a computer or a car...we are talking about a living creature. Things happen even in the best of breeding programs that just can't be forseen or be blamed on the breeder. We breeders can't be responsible for everything, but the good ones will be there to help should a problem arise.

If you don't get a contract or a health guarantee of some sort...I'd go else where because then you have absolutely no hope of getting any help or support from the breeder. And you can be pretty sure that they aren't worth a hill of beans and neither are their breeding practices.

Just my .02 worth....

I would not expect to get major vet bills paid, but in my experience they say take it to a vet for an independent exam in short order - and they will refund if there are any major problems. You are then left to contemplate whate the breeder will do with the "defective" puppy. :guilty:

Our cocker had a number of problems, but we were attached from the get go. Even though he is a pricey (vet wise) little bugger, he has a excellent personality and demeanor that makes him a beloved member of the family. We could have taken him back, but we did not buy a "showpiece" we bought a friend (that so did not sound right!)

::yes:: Walk away if this happens.

My golden is 8 and the breeder still keeps in touch. She likes to follow the blood line to see how the dogs are doing. She has been a wealth of information and the few times he has become ill, she was there with guidance, expertise and is definitely one who cares.
