Question about borrowing points- making 1st reservation!

My points are finally available and I’m booking my first DVC stay! Super excited. Question is this: the only guaranteed room I’m interested in would require me to borrow from next years points. I’m going to do a waitlist for the room I’m really hoping for. It would be less points than that guaranteed room. If my waitlist comes though, will the borrowed points I won’t then need go back to next year or once they’re borrowed, they have to be used? Thanks in advance!

Once they're borrowed they permanently move to the UY you move them to. Final transaction.

Once borrow, or banked, the point can not return. If the WL comes in, and you need less points, you could BANK the current UY points. They would become next years points, but remain as that UY points and cannot be borrowed or banked.
