OK- I hate to sound stupid but could someone explain AIM to me? I know it is instant messanger and how that works.

Do you have to be an AOL subscriber so sign up for AIM? DD's friends talk via AIM and she asked if she could also. I have no idea what is involved.

I really don't want to signed up for AOL. We already have an internet provider and I have heard horror stories about trying to cancel AOL.

TIA

you don't need to have AOL to have aim.

Like kejoda said, you don't have to have AIM to sign up for their IM service. It seems that whenever we sign up or upgrade, there is always something that gets downloaded to our computer, but nothing that we have to pay for. We just have to go in and delete.

I love having IM and use it to communicate with my college DD and even my DH who works at home in a basement office and sometimes my kids who are in another room on the desktop computer. Saves me yelling in for them to get off the computer, do their chores, etc. :rotfl: My sister also has the service and we use it sometimes, along with a friend of mine. It's a great way to stay in touch.

I have it and won't ever use AOL. My son set it up for me, so I don't know how to go about it.

We use the MSN IM mainly because the kids' friends all use it. I was chatting with DD11 last night, she was in the basement at the time and I was at our main computer. Our conversation was pretty funny. It has been a GREAT way for the kids to keep in touch with their friends from our old town!
