Question about Advantage Flea Control

We found fleas on our Cocker Spaniel (13 years old) around June 15. We applied Advantage on the recommendation of our vet. We also applied a flea-killing carpet spray through the house and thoroughly washed his bedding and anything else he gets near.

The last few days I've noticed him scratching again, so this morning I checked him closely, and sure enough.....fleas! Lots of them! yuck!

So, the Advantage only worked for about 2 weeks. What should I do? Can I try to apply Advantage again this soon? Should I switch to Frontline or something similar? Is it too soon to apply anything?

Frontline works a little better, but you'll have to treat the yard (where they're breeding) as well as your house. If you can, you might try a fogger instead of a carpet spray. Though I will say that I've found Adams flea spray (and powder) works well.

unfortunately, we live in a condo, so we can't treat the whole yard. lol. But, maybe I'll try a fogger for in the house this time. I was trying to stay away from that because it sounds like so much work.

Has anyone done a fogger in the house before? Do I need to wash all the dishes, etc. afterwards? How long do we need to be out of the house when we set it off?

THe fogger itself will tell you how long to stay out of the house. Generally it tends to be a day-long thing. If you keep the cabinets closed the dishes should be ok, but it never hurts to be careful.

Can you put out lady-bug houses or attractors? They'll eat the larvae of fleas as well as mosquitos.

Check with your vet (phone call should be fine) and ask how soon you can apply the Frontline Plus. You may need to wait another 2 2weeks. I don't know if they would have you apply it so soon after using the Advantage. (I personally find that Frontline works great.)

I use Frontline Plus because it kills both fleas and ticks. I don't use the injection because I don't like the idea of toxins floating around in the dog for six months. I'm not saying the injection is bad, but I've heard of some dogs who became ill and eventually died after getting the shot.

Keep in mind that you have an elderly dog -- you walk a fine line. The fleas could make him sick, as well as infesting your house. But using Frontline two weeks after Advantage could also make him sick. Call your vet and ask for their advice. And good luck. Fleas -- yeck!!! They're no fun at all......

My Weimaraner rarely has fleas, but when he does, we swear by Frontline, and so does our Vet. We use the topical, not the injection.
