My dog was diagnosed last Monday with Kennel Cough (she wasn't boarded anywhere and not near any other dogs - the Vet said she may have gotten it from her flavored rawhide chips). He gave a prescription for antibiotics and a cough medicine (?). She finished the cough meds, and still has 3 days on the antibiotics, but she is still coughing.

Any ideas I can bring up to the Vet? I feel so bad to hear her coughing!! I'm going to call tommorow to see if I can get an appointment.

Kennel cough is often confused with allergic bronchitis. Is she on anything for allergy (antihistamines or prednisone)?

From her chips??? Jeesh that sounds really scary to me b/c we try to do the best we can with our pets and then through no fault of your own she can get kennel cough?

10 days average but up to 14-20 days. kennel Cough can be caused by so many different organisms and sometimes more than one at a time.

It cant hurt to have her checked out again though. I hope she starts feeling better quickly!

How do they diagnose kennel cough? Is it a blood test or something?

I read earlier that dogs are getting a dog flu. ANd it is sometimes misdiagnosed as kennel cough.

I hope she feels better soon.

Princess Patty...sorry to hear about your dog.

Your description is not consistent with kennel cough. It is an infectious disease & there needs to be contact with other dogs or where other dogs have been. It is not contracted from rawhide strips!!

The cough from kennel cough can last up to 2 weeks, but each day there should be some improvement. Kennel cough has a viral component so it doesn't always respond to antibiotics but her cough should be better by now.

Coughing can be from respiratory or heart disease. What age & breed is she?
I would have her re-examined at the vet tomorrow & ask for chest xrays.

Christiane.

I often wonder if she has allergies, she is constantly itching, but has no fleas!

Scary what can happen to pets....just see what tainted food has done...

Me too! It's so sad to see a dog coughing!!

I don't think that they ran a test (actually I got a cough/cold the same time she did so my sis took her for me) Thanks for the idea about the flu, I'll have to ask about that!

She has had some improvement, she would cough throughout the night, now she's much quieter. She is a mix breed (shepard/husky/and something that keeps her a bit smaller 50lbs.) I am going to ask for the xrays!

Forgot to add...
Last Monday and Tuesday she was coughing up some phlegm (mostly white and foamy) She has stopped that thankfully.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

How old is she?

Dogs can have allergic bronchitis with or without other signs of allergies. I usually put coughing dogs on a drug called Delta Albaplex. It has an antibiotic and prednisone/cough suppressant combo.

Sorry (duh:) )I forgot to answer that! She is 5 years old. Since she has been on antibiotics for over a week, can she still take that particular drug?

Also forgot to add...that she has had this cough before. Kind of sporatically. She would only do it once in awhile, and wouldn't be for long periods of time - just once or twice. (and nothing would come up with the coughs)

OK. A cough that is initially worse at night and produces white/foamy material can be consistent with kennel cough. Is she otherwise acting fine? Dogs with kennel cough should be pretty normal except for the coughing (and sometimes they cough so hard, they vomit).

Hopefully that is all it is, but I would still get the xrays for peace of mind.

Let us know how things go tomorrow...

Christiane.

Well they did the xrays and bloodwork. She has pneumonia, her white blook cells were elevated and her liver levels were elevated also. He gave 2 more scripts and another for the cough meds.

He seems to think that my cough/cold and hers could be related. He said that I should go get checked for pneumonia also (anybody know if animals and humans can pass sickness?!!?) He also said maybe I should stay with a friend for a few days.

Thanks everyone for being so helpful!

well I have never heard that... you would leave the dog at home and go away?

why do you have to leave? Maybe the environment is inhibiting recuperation? I think they always reccommend a warm climate, nudge nudge - wink wink. can the friend be a mouse?

Aaaah, seeing the Mouse a few months early would be nice!:rotfl:

I spoke with the dr. that I saw last Tuesday and she said she has never heard of this either, but I could come in for a chest x-ray if I'm not feeling any better (which I am) and she did say that bronchitis takes a bit longer to get over. So I don't think that I'm going to be leaving any time soon.....but I would have left her home with the rest of the family.
