Question about a new AA member and the holidays....

I hope you holiday goes well. I don't believe in giving advice but I would like to suggest you go to an Al-Anon meeting. Your mother's recovery is her recovery and your family has it's own to do. You'll meet other folks in the same boat as you. It may be different circumstances but the feelings will be the same. Take care.

Perhaps you could compromise? Eliminate the alchoholic "cocktail" hour before dinner, (as suggested, replace it with punch. I have a wonderful cranberry punch that isn't too sweet that I can make with or without alchohol) but have a glass of wine each for the drinkers to toast with the meal. Only have enough wine on hand for the meal with no drinking before or after.

DH is on call, DM just got out of the hospital last night, and Ds is only 12, so we will have a no-alchohol Thanksgiving. (Although I will probably have a glass of wine with my neighbor to toast the occassion) It's Martinelli cider for us.

Well, this is pretty much what we ended up doing....we did not drink until wine with dinner. We had coffee after and I did have 1 more glass of wine after as we sat around. Mom was fine and the "alcohol" was not "focused" on at all. By that I mean there was no "anyone want another glass of wine" loudly asked. It was kind of like.....unspoken...if you want one then quietly go get one!

It was a great day and I feel like it went well...just hope the rest of the holidays go as well!

Thanks guys for all of your advice and support! I needed it and it was appreciated more than I can say!

Hope you all had/are having a great thanksgiving!

Kim
