My son loves ships and I was thinking of booking our stay at the Queen Mary hotel in Long Beach in conjunction with Disneyland. Has anyone else done this? What sort of drive time can I expect? Anything else I need to know?

Depending on traffic, it's a 30-90 minute drive. Try to avoid attempting this anytime from 7-10 am, and 3-7 pm :).

I've not been to the Queen Mary itself, so I can't help there :)

I have to be honest and others may disagree with my opinion, but that place gave me the creeps! Not just because it's "haunted". ;) I just felt it was old, run down, cramped and expensive. Now, we only took the tour, but they took us into the guest part and a couple of rooms.

I'm looking forward to what others have to say.

I've only done the self guided tour which I thought was interesting. I've never stayed there but always thought it looked like it would be fun to do.

Also, not sure if it would fit into your itinerary but if your DS likes ships you should look into going to see the USS Midway aircraft carrier down in san diego. We really liked it.

I think the Queen Mary would be great for a one night stay at the end or beginning of your trip, but not really convenient as a base for Disneyland. I haven't stayed on her, but saw the rooms when my sister's family did. The ship is beautiful. Yes she is old, but that's what's so great. The beautiful wood furniture in the cabins (especially the old first class ones) is original from the 30's and just not something you would see today. You also have much more freedom to really explore the ship if you are a hotel guest than on the tour. (I think the ghost hangs around the indoor pool;)) She really is like stepping back into a piece of history and very special. All the rest of her kind ended up scrapped on a beach in India or at the bottom of the sea. Try and book one of the former first class staterooms. If you do a search on this, I'm sure you'd come up with some recommendations. Your son must be a neat kid if he loves ships;)

I have seen her in person, but was not able to visit. Between having to head back north that day, and my feet killing me, were the reasons for that. I recall it took us more than half an hour to get there, more or less. So we just looked at her from her parking lot.
The Queen mary is very beautiful inside and out. I have seen much footage of her interior, and exterior as well. As far as the haunted part goes, as far as I know, management does still hold ghost shows in the pool area. Which is unfortunate, because if you have a real keen interest like I do, in the paranormal, there is no way to know for certain what is the show, and what is a real ghostie, etc. I tried to get the information from Guest Services of the Queen Mary as to what exactly entails this show, so that way I know what is man made for certain, and to not confuse any of the show with what might actually be paranormal. I received absolutely, positively no response. Nothing wrong with my email address either, because my first message was received and replied to, promptly.
So just beware, to begin with is it man made? A hoax? Or is it really something else all together? (Regarding any strange or odd occurences, et al)
