Queen Elizabeth funeral and looking forward

I wonder if we will see the crown again.

India would love to get those diamonds back. I read this morning that out of respect they didn't start discussion this week, but it might start soon.
I think it's tacky...putting it mildly.

The Spencer’s have a very long history with the family.

Thinking this will be the last royal anything besides the coronation for a good while. Maybe a few baby announcements from the Yorks or wedding for Lady Louise if that is televised.
No jubilees, royal weddings etc.
We have to have the formal investiture of the Prince of Wales.

And Princess Charlotte remind ing Prince George to bow...oh my. She will be our next Anne, Princess Royal.

I have two grandchildren the same age. My granddaughter is always reminding her older brother how to behave. The girls in my family are strong but a bit spicy. Lol

She's a little miss sassy pants (which I say as a compliment).

There are some great Charlotte photos on Twitter.

I missed the state funeral but saw the procession starting at the transfer from carriage to car. The pipes and drums in Windsor gave me chills. I thought the BBC coverage was very tasteful, they didn’t show the coffin internment past ground level and didn’t linger on family’s faces. It was beautiful and so, so sad.

I was juggling a lot of balls this morning and completely missed your thread @slo !

I taped it and plan to watch the early stuff while I work this afternoon. I did sit down and watch the service at Windsor. Very moving.

My understanding is that South Africa isn't requesting the return of all of the pieces of the Cullinan, only the Great Star of Africa (aka Cullinan 1), which is that enormous pear-shaped stone set near the top of the Sceptre. The original Cullinan was cut into a LOT of pieces, only about 6 of which are famous. (The heart-shaped brooch the Queen was so fond of wearing was also cut from the Cullinan.)

The problem with the Koh-i-noor diamond is that it had been a spoil of war long before the British got their hands on it; you might call it the original Blood Diamond. There are competing claims for it from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, whose previous ruling houses all owned it at one time or another. It's also supposed to be cursed, ""He who owns this diamond will own the world, but will also know all its misfortunes. Only God or a woman can wear it with impunity." That is why it's mounted in the Crown normally worn by the Queen Consort, rather than any of those worn by the Sovereign. This article does a good job of explaining the history of the claims on it: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/po...ms-for-koh-i-noor/YKI5VYQIDOFKW45UG5RMJONQWU/

Personally, I think that the Great Star of Africa should probably be returned; the Empire is gone, and I don't think it would be all that tragic to give up the stone for the good will it would garner. The Koh-i-noor's situation is less clear; yes, it was obtained via treaty (which is the UK govt's reason for claiming legitimate ownership), but the signer of the treaty that surrendered it was an 11-year old boy. Definitely questionable, but who would they return it to?

I was only able to watch bits and pieces from today and the past week. What struck me most was the calm and reverent thousands of people who lined up on the various days. I started to imagine if the same type of large a crowd assembled in the US for something like this. There would have undoubtedly been fights or worse. The British people have such a sense of tradition and honor in a modern world where most people elsewhere could not care less about those things.

Random thoughts from the week:

Loved the processions.

Loved the pipers playing the laments at the various services. (I really wish the mass pipers had gotten more TV coverage. I was watching Sky and they only flitted over them.)

Saddest moments are a tie between the corgis/horse, the removal of the crown from the coffin, and the sight of the plane leaving Scotland for the last time, flying off into the sunset. (Don't know why that last one tugged at me so hard, but it did.)

The secretary general of the Commonwealth can read me the phone book. I could listen to her talk all day!

Did anybody notice if Lady Sarah Chatto, the Queen’s niece, Margaret’s daughter, was there?

Following on others "random thoughts for the week and the events that "got me".

-On Wednesday at 2:22pm when the processional was about to set off from Buckingham Palace for Westminster Hall, there were a few moments of silence before the first drum beat, then the camera zoomed in on the senior drum major as he arched his mace into the air and the band began to play....I got chills when I saw that.

- The Queue and the hundreds of thousands who calmly paid their respects....so lovely.

-The Royal Navy sailors' precision today as they pulled the gun carriage.

-Hearing God Save the King for the first time at Westminster Abbey and seeing King Charles get emotional.

-Seeing the casket go by Buckingham Palace this morning for the final time.

-The Corgis...I'd been hoping all week that they'd somehow be included...and it got me for sure.

-Seeing the casket lowered into the vault. :(.

Truly an incredible display that I am really glad that I witnessed live, even if it was on my TV here in NJ.

Well it was interesting working in the hospital during this coverage today, beginning in the middle of the night. Many patients kept the TV coverage on all night in their rooms. Some were awake and invited staff to come in and watch with them if they had a few minutes. It was kind of fun and, like here, quite a few people were really into it! (Have always done this with these UK events and with other things like World Series games and elections such!) At one point in the wee hours I heard some beautiful singing and wasn’t sure where it was coming from so I followed it and found, in the spirit of things, an aide with a lulling voice singing to a lonely patient. (So sweet!)

I wish I could’ve joined in with the discussions here today, but I’ve finally caught up. Thanks @mom2rtk for starting the thread (and trying to keep it open). The sight of Emma, the Queen’s horse, and the corgis got to me, too. 😭 Sharing this photo that made me happy of Prince Andrew with the Corgi’s who will now be living with him. (Glad they’ll get to stay in the same area. We just rescued a dog whose owner died and it’s been hard on him, including moving half a country away.) It was also nice seeing Sara Ferguson with her family. She’s been excluded from most of the ceremonies, and I’ve felt kind of bad for Andrew, who, like Harry, also could’ve used some hand-holding during some of the more difficult times. Seeing him walk alone when he has a spouse and others were with theirs didn’t seem quite right. (I wonder if they’ll now remarry at some point.)

Overall, they must all be breathing a sigh of relief. Hope they can all sleep well tonight. 🥱

Watching the coverage on NBC evening news, I can't help but thinking - if they were Irish they'd be having a great private send off this evening. My Irish-born mom died at 96, and after the funeral we had a wonderful gathering, full of songs and stories (and drink). I'm not much for pomp and ceremony, hope they had some private family reminiscing.
