Quarters & Pennies: Pressed Penny Machine

Hi Everyone! The following questions relate to Pressed Penny Machines:

1) Is it still true that you can get a "map" of the pressed machines located in Disneyland & DCA at City Hall in Disneyland?

2) I'm Canadian and do NOT have an account in any american bank. However, if I'm able to get to an american bank once I arrive, am I able to buy rolls of quarters and rolls of pennies from the bank even though I do not have an american bank account?

3) How much does 1 roll of Quarters cost AND how much does 1 roll of Pennies cost?

4) Are the Quarters & Pennies "brand" new in the rolls OR are they a mix of old and new OR even just old coins? Obviously I would like "brand" new "shiny" pennies for the Penny Press Machines.

5) Do American coins work better in the Penny Presses (ie. do American pennies press differently from Canadian pennies?

I've read past posts which say that American and Canadian pennies press differently but don't know if anyone has had RECENT experience with using "both" American and Canadian pennies.

Also, what's the DIFFERENCE in the OUTCOME of the pressed coin when using American vs Canadian pennies!! We stopped circulating pennies in Canada and I have lots of them (ie. able to choose shiny ones) that I could use if they worked the "same" in the machines.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I've never asked for a map, most people just use parkpennies.com Rolls of coins are a mixture of old and new. There is a change machine in the Main St Opera House, Penny Arcade and Store Command, I'd just get your quarters there and save the newest ones for the pressed quarter machines. It's usually $10 for a roll of quarters, 50 cents for pennies. The quarter machines take $1 and $5. You can ask for extra pennies as change when you buy something. I've never asked at DL, but you used to be able to get rolls of coins at supermarket checkouts.

THANKS!!!!!

I will just say that technically it's illegal to press Canadian pennies. It's defacing the Queen. That said I've seen them not work nearly as well - I don't think they're as malleable.

Yes, you can get a map at the shops. Often they are just out on display near the cash registers. If you don't see them out, just ask. My son and I had a blast a few summers ago checking off all the press penny locations we visited.

I don't think you will need to "buy" rolls of coins from the bank. The cashiers in the shops are very nice and often broke larger bills for us so we had change. As a PP said, there are change machines in a few locations as well, so as long as you have some USD on hand, you should be fine.

I can't say for sure if the DLR penny machines are like this, but several machines here in the US can tell the difference between an American penny and a Canadian one and will not accept the Canadian coin. It would be interesting to try, though, if you have the coins laying around.
You should not have a problem getting coins at a bank if you want to go that route.

My son an I have made collecting pennies an ongoing mission for each trip to DLR. I've found that there are plenty of change machines around if you have US paper dollars to put into the machines. Also, shiny pennies do work best since some of the patterns are quite detailed. One last thing I've noticed is that as the years have passed, the first set of coins we collected has tarnished quite a bit. So in the end, the shininess of the penny only matters when you first press it :)

Have fun collecting pressed coins! It's a great way to see the out of the way places in the parks.

Contrary to what previous posters have mentioned, DLR no longer provides maps of the pressed penny machines. They stopped giving out maps once the 60th celebrations ended.

It's a great fortune that we aren't subject to Canadian law in the United States, then! Whew! ;)

FYI, you don't have to find a bank to get penny or quarter rolls. Pretty much any grocery or Walmart type store will sell them. Just go to the service desk and ask. It's 50 cents for a roll of 50 pennies and 10 dollars for a roll of 40 quarters. One of my favorite tips we used when our kids did the penny machines was go get the kids a couple tubes of the mini M&M. They are the perfect size to keep quarters and pennies in. Our kids used one for unsquished coins and another for squished coins.

Great info - we've never done this but might come prepared for our next trip. How much does it cost per squished penny? $.51?

Generally, yes. But there's also nickel, dime, and quarter ones. So, they can be up to $1.75 (I think) for some of the new-ish pressed quarters. But, heck, there's not much else you can get there for $1.75 ;)
