Quarantine

please don't infect other passengers. If your children(or you) get sick, it is your responsibility to take them to the ships doctor and limit the amount of time they spend in contact with other passengers. I believe I have heard that if passengers are quarantined, they are brought a DVD player, and a list of Disney DVD's to watch. So being quarantined is not all bad. pirate:

As someone who will be boarding with you on Tuesday I say ditto to this post.

And I hope the rest of your family stays healthy and you have a great cruise!

Call the on call doctor this weekend (who is probably not your peds), explain the sitution, and ask for antibiotics! As a physician and mother of 2 kids and frequent cruiser, I would have to say not giving you the antibiotics for if/when they develop all the usual sx of strep is just silly! It's not like you will give it to them prophyllactically. But having it with you if they get the sx is tremendously helpful!

We ran into a situation last year on our cruise. Our son became short of breath and we knew it was an asthma attack. He is not on any type of inhaler at home since it is not a regular occurance. The checke him out and did a breathing treatment. Like someone else said the bill was charged to our room. However, we turned it into our insurance company when we got home. The Dr office was fantastic and called the next day and day after to see how he was doing and if he needed any follow up treatment. he was not quarantined. I don't think they will do that unless they know for sure that you are contagious to others. They realize that this is your vacation and for some it is once in a lifetime so they will make sure that you enjoy it the best that they can.

Hey Marianne... The morning we were departing on our Alaska cruise, my mom woke up with a bad cough. Hadn't had any cough the 3 days we spent in Vancouver. We went thru the checkin/boarding process, and my mom informed them she had developed woke up with a cough. They didn't say anything just noted it.

By 2:00, she had a really horrible deep cough. The ships dr opens at 4:00 the day of departure, and she was in line at 3:45. The nurse tried to get her not to see the dr, and soon as my mom coughed, she said, nevermind, you're first. They will charge the visit to your room and then you can claim in on your insurance. She actually had an upper respiratory infection/borderline bronchitis. The ships dr actually called a couple times to check on her thru out the cruise. She had to go do a couple of breathing treatments thru out the trip. Fortunately the 1st two days were at sea, so she tried to stay in her room as much as possible, even though they didn't quarantine her.

Anyway, point being, the ships medic/drs where great!

Yikes sorry to hear that, hope she still manage to have a good time. Good to know that she received good care onboard.

Again situation like these can occur at anytime, another reason to get insurance!! I would never take a cruise without it.

As someone who had their child get sick with a URI while ON our cruise, due to at least one blatantly ill person (who ALWAYS seemed to be right by us - EVERYWHERE!!!) wandering around coughing all over the place, I would respectfully request that if you or your family member has something that is potentially pretty bad & contagious, like strep, PLEASE make SURE that everyone is no longer contagious and is well enough to board or consider rebooking and NOT spreading your germs to others & potentially ruining their trip.
5 days into our cruise, my son was cough-hacking like a barking dog and had great difficulty breathing. Made for a couple of very scary, sleepless nights and really put a damper on the last 2 days of our cruise.
Thank you for being considerate.

Not really sure how someone coughing near you caused a UTI?:confused3

There is no way you can be positive that the person coughing near you caused the illness you son suffered. The person may have had something like COPD, been a smoker, or had allergies. Your son may very well have been in the process of getting sick before you even boarded and you had no idea.

I'm sorry that you had a rough couple of days, but your post sounds very accusatory toward the OP who only stated that her DH had strep, and has been on antibiotics for days and has been trying to ensure that her children don't get it. Suggesting she consider rebooking her cruise 24 hours before her vacation begins is a little harsh when she has done everything she can to ensure the health and welfare of everyone already.

couldn't of said it better myself :thumbsup2

If my kids see the ship's doctor and have strep, will they be quarantined? My husband was just diagnosed with strep and the pediatrician will not send us with antibiotics if the kids do not currently have it. I'm a nervous wreck. We board Tuesday. Yikes!

I honestly would be looking for another ped when you get back. You're a responsible adult, what does he think you'll be doing w/ the antibiotics? My peds would definitley give us the extra antibiotics to take. If we were going on a land vacation, they'd say "call me right away if anyone else shows symptoms, and I'll call in a script to where ever you are". We've gone that route many times. But on a cruise, can't do that.

Sorry, I posted that it was a URI. NOT a UTI!!!
My son was perfectly healthy (as were we, his parents) when we boarded. URI's take about 3 days to fully develop, so 5 days into the cruise, we're fairly certain that he did catch it onboard. The hackers were discussed in another thread and I don't want to, again, get into how we are fairly certain from whom he caught it.

The person who accused me of being accusatory & harsh, PLEASE reread what I wrote! I believe that it was very polite and respectfully requested. I was NOT being at all accusatory toward the OP, just sincerely hoping that people will be considerate enough to be CERTAIN that they are healthy and filling out the Health Assessments truthfully before placing themselves in a closed, contained environment where germs and viruses are spread very quickly and easily. Sure, rebooking a cruise a couple of days beforehand would be a serious hassle - especially without having trip insurance. But how much of a hassle is it for an entire ship full of people to potentially get ill because one family doesn't wish to be inconvenienced??? That is one souvenir that NOBODY needs to take home!

FYI...she said URI (Upper Respiratory Infection) NOT a UTI. Someone coughing can spread germs and pass around a URI. That being said, there's no way to know for sure. As a mom to two asmathic children, I am one of the most paranoid people out there, because my girls go from zero to pneumonia in no time flat. You can't let it ruin your plans...you just have to bring your meds, see the doc when you need to, and get back out there when you are able. But, take the advice of the doc when he says you are contagious and should stay in the room. :thumbsup2

It's kind of interesting to read the different posts on this subject. I know some people feel that the doctor should really go ahead and prescribe the meds for the kids, just in case. But I have to commend the doctor that doesn't. First, we have no idea who the OP is. Sorry OP, I am not accusing you in any way of being a hypochondriac, but I have an adult daughter who is. She would give her kids the meds just in case with no symptoms. Or she would the first time they sneezed or ran a small fever. She takes my grandkids and herself to the doctor about every other month with something or other. Also, what if the OP's child did start running a fever and showing signs of strep and she gives them the medication, only to find out that they didn't have strep at all. What if they were running a fever for a very different reason, like appendicitis or a UTI. The poor child could have a delay in medical treatment because an assumption was made. With today's lawsuit happy country that we live, I sure can't blame a doctor for being very cautious about prescribing something that is not needed. In my opinion, the only reason that someone would insist on the meds is to avoid being quarantined if they are contagious on the cruise. Not a good reason to me.

I DID try. I called 2x! No go on the antibiotics. I'm so mad about it!

Take them to an urgent care clinic and explain the situation. They MAY be willing to help you out.

The first time we took my daughter to urgent care, they refused to give us any antibiotics. Fast forward a couple of months - and she exhibits symptoms on a Sunday. VERY minor - highly unnoticeable. But we were leaving on a Tuesday for WDW. Took her to urgent care, explained the situation and they were very willing to put her on a z-pac. She did end up with cold symptoms, and a follow up with her doctor when we got back proved that if she hadn't had the meds, she would have had an ear infection because there was fluid build up in her ear.

If urgent care won't help you out - give your kids some echinacea. You can find it with the herbal supplements. If you don't already, give them a multi vitamin. Check the RDA of vitamin C, and if it's less than 100%, give them a vitamin C supplement too. As another poster suggested, frequent hand washing, and wiping of common surfaces with disinfectant wipes - and you should be just fine.

Good luck! Hope everyone is at their best by the time you leave! :)
