If my kids see the ship's doctor and have strep, will they be quarantined? My husband was just diagnosed with strep and the pediatrician will not send us with antibiotics if the kids do not currently have it. I'm a nervous wreck. We board Tuesday. Yikes!

Most lily they will be Quarantined to their cabin. But if they have signs of having strep. DON"T SEND THEM TO THE KIDS CLUB IF THEY ARE SICK! The ship has to report sickness, and if it becomes to high, they will quarantine the entire ship. Confine the sickness, wash hands regularly, I would lock you husband in the bedroom until you leave!

:rotfl: O.K. so i was embelishing a lot of that. But please don't infect other passengers. If your children(or you) get sick, it is your responsibility to take them to the ships doctor and limit the amount of time they spend in contact with other passengers. I believe I have heard that if passengers are quarantined, they are brought a DVD player, and a list of Disney DVD's to watch. So being quarantined is not all bad. pirate:

First I would wipe everything down with lysol. Toilet knobs, faucets, door knobs, etc. Get an appointment with their pediatrician and explain the situation.

It's hard to say. My doctor has told me in the past that strep throat isn't highly contagious, but is still contagious. He said that the infection is not good at living airborne. So you usually have to drink after someone or have immediately touch something with their saliva (etc.) and then transfer it to your mouth to contract it. So maybe your children won't even get it. They may ban them from the childcare though. Sorry, I wasn't much help. Anyone else know?

Oh, I just did a google search and WebMD says that a person is no longer contagious after on antibiotics for 24 hours. So maybe the quarantine will be short.

I have 3 kids and many times only one of the kids got Strep. Keep positive, wash hands, but as other posters have said keep an eye on them and see the doctor if you suspect anything.

You do have to fill out a health form before boarding asking about fever, diarrhea and I think sore throat in the last few days.

Be honest about the situation as I am sure you would expect and appreciate everyone else to be. I would hate to have my vacation ruined because someone hide the fact their were sick to get on board and ended up infecting other :sad2:

I have a question, maybe someone here would know the answer, when you see the doctor onboard do you have to pay?

If you do end up quarantined does the insurance reimburse you?

Strep infections can be very serious, especially with young children. Please assess the seriousness of your situation realistically (not optimistically!) before you decide to board the ship.

DH was quarantined for 24 hours on our last cruise. Usually, you do have to pay for the doctor, however, since we had been on the cruise for 9 days by the time he got sick, it was determined that he got sick on the cruise and they waived the payment.

The insurance we had would have paid for the doctor, but we would have to pay up front and get reimbursed by them. Also, he was quarantined on a sea day, so we had no excursions to cover. But, if he had had to cancel an excursion, the insurance would have paid. They also covered the one day cost on his portion on the cruise.

You can be seen by a medic for no charge but if you need to be seen by a doctor, there is a charge. Travel insurance will cover these expenses if you medical insurance won't. The majority of time when someone in my family has had strep, it has been isolated to the one person. Strep is something to be careful about because my son did not present with typical symptoms (sore throat, fever) and went undiagnosed which later led to complications. Have you talked to a travel doctor? Maybe they would help with suggestions.

My youngest got sick on our last trip but he wasn't quarantined. He just had an ear infection. They gave him antibiotics and Tylenol. The whole dr visit cost us about $100 with medications. We filed with insurance when we got home and were reimbursed for part of it. we did keep him from the nursery and everything until he had been fever free for 24 hours.

Can you talk to the ped. again? Explain that you just would prefer to give the kids precautionary antibiotics because you are cruising and don't want the kids to get sick or anyone else on the ship? I know my ped. would be willing to help us in a situation like this. I know many Dr. are worried about the over-prescribing of antibiotics, but as long as your not one of those parents that seeks them everytime your kid sniffles, I cannot understand why in this situation he/she wouldn't agree.

Can you get checked on Sunday or Monday? :confused3 That way you can board in good conscience (either with a prescription or a clean bill of health). There must be an urgent care close to port.

I can understand a doctor not wanting to prescribe antibiotics if the kids don't appear to have it at this point because the antibiotics are no longer affective if they do actually get it, then another antibiotic has to be used instead. There are only so many types of antibiotics to treat strep. I learned this recently through the ear, nose, and throat doctor I was sent to by my regular physician (this past Tuesday) because I have had strep 5 times since in the last 5 months, been on 6 antibiotics and two doses of steroids. I am now having my tonsils out because I have run through all the antibiotics and none of them have worked.

I'm sure everything will work out just fine! Enjoy your trip!

Thanks :thumbsup2

If your kids start to exhibit symptoms between the time you leave home and board the ship, one last option is the CVS minute clinic. We've visited these in a pinch and have had antibiotics prescribed. The nice part was it only cost a copay versus a full payment that might be required at other types of clinics.

I DID try. I called 2x! No go on the antibiotics. I'm so mad about it!

You have a very ethical and responsible pediatrician. Think of the thousands of people who want "just in case" antibiotics. Misuse/overuse is what leads to antibiotic resistance, giving us organisms such as MRSA, VRE, CRE, etc.

When we can't treat "superbugs," blame all of those misusing antibiotics.

I can see them not giving you the antibiotics if they are not yet sick. I have a hard time getting medication for our cruises of "just in case" and I work in the field and do the DXing. So, I would just be really good about hand washing. If your DH has already been on antibiotics for 24 hrs, he is good anyway. The kids or yourself if coming down with it, will probably come down with it on your trip; but this could be the case from the airplane. So do not worry about it and just deal with it "IF" it comes up. Do not worry yourself "sick" literally about it. If you stress out about it, then you will lower your immune system and for sure come down with it. If they were to give all of you antibiotics, you could not take them now and think they will prevent the strep. If anything, you would take them now and then that course would not work if you/them actually came down with it. Another thing...... YES Strep is very contagious, especially to people who are prone to get it..... Also, if your kids were to get it and it is not treated, they can get VERY sick, especially when in an "hotter" enviroment like the POCs. Strep raises the heart rate and body temperature, and when in a hot place, this is even worst.
So what should you do.... Right now, do not stress out, just get a plan. If the kids or yourself are showing symptoms before going, then head to urgent care and get the antibiotics. If they are once you get there, if on land then head to a Urgent Care on land. If it is once you are on the ship, then head to the Ship's doctor and get the needed antibiotics. After 24 hours you are good to go anyway. So, don't stress yourself into getting sick! Enjoy your cruise. Everything will be fine! :thumbsup2

I second the dr appointment to verify that they are healthy for your cruise:goodvibes

I wanted to give you a bit of encouragment. My DD and I have had it a couple of times last year and both times we did not pass it along to DS or DH. I am sure I "shared" germs with both of them before knowing I had it. Make sure hubby is taking his meds and y'all should be good:goodvibes

Hey Marianne... The morning we were departing on our Alaska cruise, my mom woke up with a bad cough. Hadn't had any cough the 3 days we spent in Vancouver. We went thru the checkin/boarding process, and my mom informed them she had developed woke up with a cough. They didn't say anything just noted it.

By 2:00, she had a really horrible deep cough. The ships dr opens at 4:00 the day of departure, and she was in line at 3:45. The nurse tried to get her not to see the dr, and soon as my mom coughed, she said, nevermind, you're first. They will charge the visit to your room and then you can claim in on your insurance. She actually had an upper respiratory infection/borderline bronchitis. The ships dr actually called a couple times to check on her thru out the cruise. She had to go do a couple of breathing treatments thru out the trip. Fortunately the 1st two days were at sea, so she tried to stay in her room as much as possible, even though they didn't quarantine her.

Anyway, point being, the ships medic/drs where great!
