Quarantine and chill and kindness chatty clubhouse: Jump in and join the conversation! All is welcome!

...Then we hot footed it over to the Lower East Side and reached that palace of Jewish deli, Katz. Tried to paint a visual picture of the Chinatown, Little Italy and LES, of my growing years for DGD as we walked and I think Katz did the best job of still looking the same decades later. She now wants to see “Crossing Delancey Street”, a movie that she turned her nose up at earlier in the week; kids are funny...
We really love that movie and I have been thinking of planning a date night around it. Your food adventures around the city have inspired me. One of our favorite delis finally reopened (Langers), so maybe we'll try takeout pastrami (even though Canter's has better pickles -- but I think maybe Langer's now gets their pickles from Canter's, so maybe all will be well in the end). If I really want to go over the top, I'll order a cheesecake from the Little Pie Company... DH would be very surprised by that gift! Your food adventures reminded me of so many happy memories of our trips to NYC. (I still have vivid memories of Katz' and the sizzling sausages...) One day we hope to get back (so we can eat our way across the city!). And your DGD is so lucky to have you to help her grow into her own person with grace and wisdom. With good food, good books, a (fake) nose ring, and Doc Martens? She is on her way to a rich and wonderful life! :) And your porchetta sounds lovely!

Good Morning, All and quack to you too!

DGD and I ventured out into the city yesterday for the first time in what seemed to be donkey years.
Took the subway down to Chinatown and loaded up on wonton making supplies, stood in front of a favorite noodle shop for a bit totally disoriented as to where we were courtesy of the new shelters for outdoor eating. Fortunately, the proprietor recognized us and took our take out order, LOL.

Her father has been wracking his brain trying to get her the right holiday presents (nose piercing, anyone?) so after returning home, I texted him a list of 20th and late 19th century New York centric writers - nothing wrong with books as gifts. Oh right and a link to Doc Marten’s website since nothing says
21st century urbanization like a pair in red, yellow, or blue.

As of 3:00 AM, the turkey wasn't fully defrosted so changed the day’s plan around. Polished the living space furniture with beeswax(it smells sooo good!), washed the last window, and opened the treasure trove of holiday decor so DGD can see it when she gets her lazybones out of bed. Around noon we’ll be off to Yonkers to do some food shopping for Christmas Eve.

Katz deli is great, it’s actually on the same block of Ludlow that my brother’s apartment building is on. We have stayed multiple times in the two hotels on that block over the years since DD30 moved to NYC. LES is an interesting area. I like that we can visit my brother and his dogs when staying nearby. Last summer we stayed in a new hotel in the Seaport area overlooking the Brooklyn bridge which was very nice but a hike from the nearest subway station. That area appears to me that it’s still in the process of being reimagined after hurricane Sandy, and its far from the museums but we did fine. Got to spend a lot of time with DD30 and her BF. And had some great meals. DH wants to try for another NYC trip this summer, visit our friend in upstate NY, etc. I think it’s too far out to plan at this point. We will see.

Greetings all-
Been a bit lazy about keeping up, so I'm sure I'm missing a conversation or question or two. Sorry! Welcome to all new posters! Good to see you here.

Put up the tree last night, earliest we've EVER put it up. Have a skinny pencil tree this year, not our usually larger one, so hardly put any ornaments on it. Just kept it simple vs. overloaded. Decided it was time to start separating out the ornaments the kids had picked out over the years and set them aside for them, maybe refresh my collection with some new ones. Watched White Christmas last night, and Home Alone Saturday - two down!
My folks decided to still head north, and I'll pick them up from the airport on Wednesday. Hope we don't give them anything....We do have some business meetings that require some in person document signing so they'd have had to come up anyway.
Got my Christmas shopping done on Saturday, so with the exception of a few items I need to order online I'm about done. Well - still need to food & booze shop, but other than THAT I'm about done :rolleyes1

Skinny pencil tree this year in our sitting room, since our finished basement area w/ room for a bigger tree is otherwise occupied. Not cats, and the dogs don't appear to interested. One of our dogs does have a obsession with plush pillows though, so I'm hoping he doesn't take a shine to the tree skirt!

Agreeing to the nth! It was a visit well worth the weather (constant drizzle) and time of day (already dark by 6:00 PM). Got a bit lost and confused the neon sign of Essex Market for Katz‘s but a few more blocks up put us straight. The ticket taker at the restaurant and bright fluorescent lights within made me feel back home. Good on you and yours for seeing the new LES!

I’ve a 1/2 case of champagne and a couple of bottles of Prosecco that I’ve no one to drink with if that’s any help 😉. Looking for mocktail concoctions that are festive for DGD and I to drink this season; the hardships that girlie puts me through:lmao:. On the bright side I have made up the CE menu for the two of us: a nosh platter of seafood and a bowl of RI clam chowder. 7 different types of seafood, some comfy pjs, “A Christmas Story”, and a Mass straight from Rome should make for a memorable night before Christmas.

Good afternoon.

Chores around the house today and then to two liquor stores. Wanted to buy DS local Cecil County beers so that was at one store. DDIL wanted South American wine so to a different store for that. @easyas123, Monday morning is a great time to hit liquor stores. It was us and the employees. So except for going to Starbucks for a gift card, I think I am done.

I enjoy all the NYC talk even though not familiar. I lived in the Bronx my senior year of college 1974-75 for my clinical rotations. Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Did some Christmas shopping in Manhattan that year but it was an hour by subway. Didn't do much eating out or sightseeing. We had classes 6 days a week.

I dearly enjoy some decent champagne on occasion, imagine my delight when my future DIL told me it gives her a headache! No more than one glass for her....more for me! ha ha! I'm mostly a holiday champagne drinker - If I didn't curb myself I'd wake up in a bad re-creation of AbFab.

I'm not Catholic (I'm not even baptized 🤫 although my husband is) but we enjoy listening to mass now & then, and truly enjoy the music around this time of year. I guess it's a subconscious throw back to my ancestors to gravitate towards it, my grandmothers uncle was a Priest, and my aunt is a nun. It somehow seems (to me) that having the TV on Christmas Eve seems not to fit the mood I'm in, so it's usually a mass and /or music for us.

Thanks, they are courtesy of the kids & husband. I'll try to post some others later this evening. Never thought my home would feature so much taxidermy (for a while it was a hobby of youngest & my husband), and I'm perfectly happy NOT adding anymore! Duck hunting is HUGE for them, especially the kids. They actually built their own duck hunting boat for late winter duck hunting on the Chesapeake Bay. Wild game makes up about half of our meals due to them, and has turned all of them into adventurous cooks & eaters. They have more cookbooks that I do!

Today Yuma is not the sunniest place on earth...forcast for clouds for the next 3 days...though not forcasted is the wind...suppose to be outside pricing all the vintage metal items for building that I bought over the last three years at estate auctions. No one wanted to hustle the pile in the afternoon heat so I bid for the chore of hauling out to the truck...always one treasure in the scrap metal that made it all worth while...anyhow the wind is bad so inside listening to the 50s 60s christmas music from youtube while price out boxes of fabric for farmer market....not for garage sale...all rubber banded and price for the serious buyer. the vintage fabric came from a rummage sale where the lady in charge was so overwhelemd by the estate donation, that an hour into sale, she just boxed the fabric...the plastic totes was worth the price she marked...so textiles going out cheap even though ebay says 60-100..but that is life on the border....no one lives here who needs 5 yards of this or 7 yards of this in a serious manner....but you know quilting and sewing folks...they will respond to any great buy!!!!! Scrap fabric and scrap metal is all the same....you never know when you need to patch a hole!!🌴🌴🎄🌵🌵🎄🌴🌴☀☀☀🌑🌑

Afternoon all.

Nice Sunny and chilly day here in Philly. We got a food drop off today and I convinced the church I need keys. We almost had to turn it down because we couldn't find anyone with keys to let me in. Thankfully my mom finally called and met me at the church. We got over 33 cases of canned goods - vegetables, soups, tuna & chicken, tomatoes, beans and that is just what I remember. We will be feeding a lot of hungry people.

Went to the collision center that repaired my cat over the summer and that site is closed. I'll try again tomorrow. Picked up some nice crusty bread to go with the leftovers from yesterday. The best part about golabki is I get a couple days of soup for leftovers. Perfect on a nice chilly evening.

I am almost decorated for Christmas except the tree. I still don't trust the cat. He attacked the lights as I was hanging them today.

Back to picture organizing. I may get it done one day.

@snappy, :welcome: Always good to "see" someone new here! This is a great group...they even put up with the chronically depressed complainers (trust me, I know ;) )

@tazdev3225, I am so sorry about your car! That is one of the most maddening things to happen! I've actually had people do it twice when I was sitting right there in my car. One time the guy who did it just drove away; the other time when I called the person out on it, he said "Prove it" and kept walking away. It really makes me mad, but nothing I can do about it. Around here, if it's in a parking lot, the police won't do anything about it because it's private property. They won't even come out to take a report for insurance

I found out over the weekend that the father of one of my close friends passed away last week. Well, we were close 25 years ago. Back in the mid-90s, I had a really good group of friends and we got together every Friday night. We'd go out to dinner, then back to someone's house to watch The X-Files. Usually we went to Chris's house (he had his own personal space in the basement - lots of fun because he was 2 years older than us, so he bought our alcohol. Nothing major...always wine coolers. Seagrams, Bartles and Jaymes, Purple Passions...and the occasional Goldschlager, of course ;) ) or Keith's house. No alcohol there, but we were in walking distance of a 7-11 and his parents were REALLY cool. I felt more at home at those two houses than my own. We had a good run, but starting in '97, we all started getting married and having kids. And then Keith and Jen moved out to the midwest and that was kind of the end of our group. Keith's father was the one who passed. I'd known he had cancer, but from all reports he was doing well. It's weird that lately I've been thinking a lot about those fun years and missing them. Just feels so final now.

DH and I got up very early yesterday morning to head over to Target for the 10% off gift cards. I got a few for Josh's teacher and classroom helper, plus I always buy 4 $25 cards for us to use during the following year. I usually take one with us on our drive to Florida, so we can stock up the Clearwater Target before our drive home, but obviously that won't be happening this year. It's still nice to have for those times when we do a big shop, though. After Target, DH took Josh to his parents' house for a while so I could work on the picture frames that we're decorating for gifts and addressing our Christmas cards.

Today the kids in town returned to school (still on the hybrid model, though), and for all of his whining and screaming that he hates school, Josh got right on the bus this morning. I hope he comes home wearing the same pants as when he left :( My mom and I went to the grocery store and library. Stopped at Dunkin for gift cards as well, so I'm all done with Josh's teacher, classroom helper, and bus driver now. I wrapped some gifts, so now it doesn't look so empty under the tree. Tomorrow night we will go to Bright Nights at Forest Park (already have our ticket!) and this coming Friday and Saturday night there is a Grinch and Santa "Beep and Greet" at the Springfield Museums that we'd like to try to see. We're also considering going to the "Winter Wonderland" drive-thru at the Big E. Just want to do some Christmas stuff and get out of the house, even if we can't do our usual traditions.

Still waiting on the missing orders. The one that is concerning me the most is merely a sheet of 4 wallet-sized photos from Shutterfly. It was delivered to the post office at the airport on November 30 and has not been scanned since. The airport is only 20 minutes from our house, so even with the USPS slowdown, it really shouldn't take a full week (or more) to be delivered. It's still showing Wednesday, December 2nd as the estimated delivery date. The other 2 orders also haven't been updated, but they haven't passed their estimated delivery yet, so I'm sure they're just not scanning them. And the fourth item is finally moving! I'm a little peeved that the company sent me an email that the item shipped on November 26, but it stayed in "USPS is awaiting item" status until Saturday - December 5th!
Love your decorations..that's sweet about Josh leaving gifts for Santa..may I ask what he leaves for him?
Just little drawings that he did. He wrapped one in a box, and the others are all in bags. Just random bags...one is a Puppy Dog Pals birthday bag, one is the Stranger Things bad that I made for DH's gift last year, one is a Valentine's Day bag, etc. He left a gift for Santa last year, too - I think it was one of DH's old Black Sabbath t-shirts :rockband::rotfl:
I just thought up a QOTD - What is the best thing that happened to you this year?

1. My cutie grandson was born in May.
2. I met all of you people.
It has to be meeting all of you! Seriously! This has been a bum year, that's for sure, but I met some great people and I'm grateful for that.

apirateslifeforme - I get the police. They won't come to an accident here unless there is bodily injury or severe vehicle damage requiring a tow. Forget about parking lots. The damage isn't severe, some scrapes and paint chips, it just annoys me that I take meticulous care of my car and this happens. As long as the reverse cameras aren't damaged I may just live with it.

Hooray for a bunch of new posts :)

Good afternoon, everyone from still darker and chillier LA.

Lynxstch and PollyannaMom, wow to have so many Christmas movies to watch that is wonderful though :)

Carol, as always loved worship from your church. I wish lol it had a LA branch! I do have a Reverend friend who is (local) at a Methodist church. I'll have to ask him whether it's connected at all to yours.

Working on completing photo album Christmas gifts. Lol, don't ever try making photo albums for long distance folks during a plague! Not easy. Dad is going to Target on Wednesday where I hope they have some Christmas cards I can send. Otherwise, ecards, here I come along with some postcards/notes! I may look one last time on Amazon, being extra careful to make sure "glitter" is not part of the description!

:grouphug: to all of you!

Well, I was wrong. The mail just came and my wallet photos from Shutterfly arrived. It *is* still very odd that it took a full week to go from one post office to another to our house, but at least it isn't lost. Now I can put Josh's first school photo in the 12-year collage in the dining room (along with mine and DH's), and give one to DH for his desk at work :)

I forgot to post, too, that I always remember that today is Pearl Harbor Day, "a day that will live in infamy." It's something that I've taught Josh already, even though I'm sure he doesn't understand it. He's seen photos of the Pearl Harbor Memorial, with the actual USS Arizona in the water underneath it - he thinks it's cool, I find it haunting. The finale of NCIS last season, with the dying veteran who wanted his ashes to be returned to the ship, made me cry. DH and I did not know that that could actually be done and we think it's beautiful and absolutely fitting.

It is also a friend's birthday and Joshua's 6-year "transfer-versary" (the day he and his siblings were put back in my belly). Earlier this morning, I showed him the photo of him as a 5-day embryo, and as I posted on FB, "How many people can say they have a photo of their child this young?" ;) I also can't wait for him to understand how IVF works so I can joke with him, "When Mommy got pregnant, Daddy wasn't even in the room" :teeth:
