Québec cruises

The New England and eastern Canada cruises have usually been done in the fall out of NYC after the Magic returns stateside from the WBTA. Fall 2023 itineraries haven’t been released yet. We would love a cruise out of NYC because it’s driving distance for us.

We did the Quebec to NYC cruise. Rented cars to drive to Quebec (one way) and cruised back to NY. Loved that cruise!! Short drive home the NYC port.

Given the current speed restrictions in the Gulf of St.Lawrence to protect whales, the fact that these cruises did not do very well (they had to be very heavily discounted, but this is also normal at that time of the year), and the very limited departures currently out of NYC, Quebec is unlikely to be much of a priority for Disney... until such time as a ship spends a bit more time out of NYC and the current mix of cruises (Bermuda + NE/Canada) gets a bit stale...

For other cruise lines, cruises visiting Quebec City do great in the fall. Disney last time didn't schedule the two cruises well, so they are now playing it safe by running cruises out of NYC roundtrip. It means it will be difficult to hit Quebec even on a 7-nighter.

What I would do is, fly or drive to Quebec City on your own. Explore the city and the area for 2-3 days. It's pure bliss in the summer and fall. Then, drive/fly down to NYC to get your DCL fix. This should be doable in a week.

Oh but I live near Quebec been numerous time
was wishing they come back so I’d do one
tought it would be nice leaving from home no planes …

We were on the NYC to Quebec City cruise. It was fantastic. Mostly good weather. And the people in the ports were SO EXCITED that we were there. There were people at the docks when we got off the ship in the morning and they were still there when we returned in the afternoon. Lots of smiling faces and handshakes (pre COVID).

And for those who have never been to Quebec City - it's a wonderful town. We spent a few days after our cruise wandering the city.

I wonder what it is like departing from NY city. For me it’s a much bigger city than Vancouver or Fort Lauderdale. Are the logistics more difficult travel and hotel wise?

@mullysisters
We have been lucky to have someone, my DSis, willing to drive us to the port from NJ, and our friends who have picked us up think the port is well located regarding the roads to get there.

One year we stayed at the DCL hotel in NYC to be able to enjoy some shows, and that wasn’t a problem for my DSis to get us there either.

New York departure very easy. We stayed at a hotel on west side (maybe a Hampton?). We could have walked to port but it would have been a bit of a trek so we took a cab from hotel. Very easy access (pre-covid). Leaving Manhattan is breathtaking. I probably took 50 pictures of the Statue of Liberty!

I'm doing again with my daughter that s time and will probably just train up the morning of departure.

We have done a Quebec City to NYC cruise on NCL and it was one of our favorite cruises, ever. We love cruising that area in general (have our third one planned for October) and Quebec City is just a gem of departure port. We spent several nights there prior to the cruise and just fell in love. It's a very walkable city and you are basically transported to Europe without having to cross the pond. That particular cruise we got lucky and the Fall colors were at their peak in most places. Ahh - memories!

Sorry, OP I can't answer your question as to whether or not DCL will try that again, but there are plenty of other lines that do. It's an amazing itinerary - especially in the Fall!

Edited to add: And yes, @Travel60 is spot on - sailing either into or out of Manhattan is a must for any cruise lover. It's just beautiful, whether it's sailing out on cool, crisp evening past Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty or waking up before dawn to watch the sail in and see the city waking up. It's just incredible.

We would do the Quebec to NYC cruise again in a heartbeat!
We rented a car to drive from NH, then took the train from NYC to Boston. Was wonderful not to fly!
As someone stated above, the towns people were so welcoming to the cruisers!
Floating by the Statue of Liberty at 5am was such a treat!

I was wondering because the last one couldn’t work for us

but as we live so close to Quebec ( a 2 hrs drive at most ) it would have been so much fun to do and as a bonus not having to fly to the cruise

We spent about 5 days in Manhattan before our cruise (our 1st time to NYC). We found a hotel on 46th between 8th and 10th ave - so it was an easy walk towards times square to catch the subways and another easy walk to to port.

Our departure was delayed for some reason. The captain came on and announced that we when we would be sailing past the Statue of Liberty. He was WRONG. Once we left the dock / port it seemed like they put the peddle to the metal and we were flying down the Hudson and made it to the Statue much earlier than was announced. We rushed out of dinner to catch a glimpse as we sailed past her.

While we were in NYC we did go to Liberty Island and took a night cruise around Manhattan, so we got really good views of the Statue on those "excursions"

I am not from a big city. How is using the subway? Could you get a hotel closer to the docks? I will be doing a solo TA. I have s a great deal of time in Toronto but that’s not really the same as NY.

Pre-covid, I was researching a cruise out of NYC and there are some hotels in NJ (across the Hudson from port) with stay/park/cruise deals that we were considering vs staying in NYC...but I can't remember what motels they were.

Edit: Sorry...didn't fully read through your post...guess this doesn't apply to you if your end stop is NYC, I was thinking more of the round trip cruises from NYC.

There are a couple of hotels about one block (5 minute walk) from the port. The nearest subway station is about a 15 minute walk. There are buses that can get you much closer, if you're OK with that. You can also stay at an expensive hotel in Times Square and have Disney hire your transportation to the port, but the nearest subway station to that hotel is also about a 10 minute walk.

If you're flying into NYC, then you might be better off going with DCL transportation to the hotel and then to the port. It's a pricey hotel, though. I was quoted $525/night for a cruise coming up in October. I decided to stay elsewhere and just walk the 15 minutes from a different hotel on the morning of the cruise.

The subway itself isn't too bad. It's not as clean as some others, but it's usually close to on time and it'll get you where you need to be. Well, except for the cruise terminal.

If you take the train into NYC, then you'll get off at Penn Station and you can take the subway up to 50th St., which is one of the closest stations to the cruise port.

You can also just get a taxi. Most hotels will get a cab for your or call you a car if you ask them to. There's a taxi stand at Penn Station, too.

We used to live in Toronto (we live an hour outside the city, now) and if you can do downtown Toronto, you can do NYC. In fact, I find NYC easier because all the streets in Manhattan are on a grid pattern so it's impossible to get lost or go the wrong way. I took my 10 year old for a birthday trip two weeks ago, and we took the train from the Newark airport to get to Manhattan, and the subway/bus to Laguardia airport to fly home. No problems at all -- if you can figure out the TTC, you can figure out the MTA. ;)

When we cruised out of NYC with DCL a few years ago, we got a hotel that was around Rockefeller Center and then got a Lyft to the port. It was only about a 10 minute drive, and a few dollars, but it wasn't the sort of thing I'd want to try to walk because the port area did not seem like it was pedestrian-friendly at all. When we got off the cruise, we got a taxi from the port to Penn Station, and then a train to the airport.
