So Qantas successfully started flying to Dallas this week, and they didnt even run out of fuel on the way back! :thumbsup2

Wish I was on this flight!

Thank God for that now i can stop worrying about being in the middle of the ocean when they run out of fuel:rotfl:
Only 71 sleeps to go for us and it can't come quick enough :woohoo:
:cheer2: We did all get excited when they showed the first flight on the news:cheer2:

Great to hear the flight made it :) Ours goes in October.

Can anyone recommend hotels near the airport with a separate bedroom? We've got an overnight at DFW before heading to Detroit :)

:scared1: Thanks Queenie your a gem  if i have nightmares tonight I'll know who to blame :rotfl:

Haven't stayed yet but we booked Embassy suites Dallas - Lovefield rated well on tripadvisor just realized it was not Fort worth but we are staying there the night before we fly home so it will be fine we paid Aus$139.64 for the night sleeping 6 of us.

Oh my gosh, I am flying Qantas this Wednesday and I am so ridiculously nervous lol I am not a fan of flying...the longest I've ever flown was 3 hours...and I have to be on a plane OVER THE OCEAN for 14 hours....I am so taking a Xanax. hahaha

Is anyone else here afraid of flying?

No I'm not afraid of flying. I in a general sense enjoy flying actually. I love aircraft and I have a nostalgic love of the 747-400. In the 'good old days' when kids got to visit the cockpit and talk to the captain and get their wings it was certainly fun.

I don't 'enjoy' being in a tin can for 14 hours in Cattle class although Economy Plus with it's extra legroom on United has made for a more tolerable journey.
But the result of getting to visit a new place or re-visit somewhere you love more than makes up for the journey.

Used to be -

"Air India....so brave to be flying with us..."

Now...

It's QANTAS :lmao:

if we run out of fuel, at least it will be on the way back :rotfl2:

:sad2: somehow i am not feeling reassured by that i think i will be the first one of us to try this flight:scared1:
I figure it will be taking the on a wing and a prayer to a new level:rotfl:

I know you depend on me for "positive" news so here we go - :lmao:

1 - Why it's more likely to happen in summer

http://www.smh.com.au/travel/travel-news/letters-surprise-landing-20110608-1fshf.html

"I was on a Qantas flight from Dallas to Brisbane on May 30 when it had to make an unscheduled stop in Noumea to refuel.
What has not been reported is the reason for the refuel. Qantas already knows about the headwinds that aircraft face flying east to west. However, the aircraft could not take on a full load of fuel in Dallas due to the high temperature on the tarmac there.
Qantas management will need to think seriously about the sense in trying to fly directly to and from Dallas, especially at a time of year when temperatures are very high."

2 - The problems overall...and why it might well happen again...and why your luggage might arrive on a different flight :rotfl:

http://www.smh.com.au/travel/travel-news/trouble-in-texas-20110608-1fsh0.html

Part of the story...
"At least one of the return flights was forced to set down in Noumea, New Caledonia, for extra fuel about two hours short of the scheduled refuelling stop in Brisbane. (The journey from Dallas to Sydney is against prevailing westerly headwinds and requires a fuel stop in Brisbane.)
Another flight was forced to offload two luggage containers at Dallas "because of a late increase in the forecast headwind", according to the head of Qantas's integrated operations centre, Alan Milne."

Enjoy ;) :lmao:
