My son wondered at age 5 why the characters talk on TV but they don't when we go to WDW. I explained that they had a bad cold and were saving their voices. He didn't buy it.

He keeps the secret for his little brother's sake though. :)

I think my 9yo dd knows but just hasn't said anything. I think she still wants to believe in her heart and doesn't ask.

Better?

My grandson never asked about the characters, I guess he always knew there was someone inside those costumes.

A funny story. Growing up he loves the Tomorrowland Speedway. We would spend hours in line, thought he was really driving these cars around the speedway. DH and I would roll our eyes, again and again we would have to wait in at least an hours line so he could drive these cars.

On the spring of his 8th Birthday he grew up. He looked down "hey I'm not driving these cars, there's a track". My heart broke that day. He still likes this ride, but not with the same enthusiasm.

I hear people say my child is too young for Disney, how wrong they are. Where would you ever get the innocence, excitement and pleasure of seeing a child who believes.

It's one of the most rewarding pleasures of being a parent or grandparent, and seeing the twinkle in their eye. A twinkle the only Disney could put there.

I have a photo of me and "Chef" Mickey on my desk here at work and when I'm with the characters at WDW they ARE real!:smooth:

Last time we went to WDW it was hot, hot, hot for December -- in the 80s and humid. DD was just shy of 6 y.o.

We were watching a parade and I said "It must be even hotter when you're as furry as a chipmunk" as Chip and Dale danced by. DD turned to me, horrified, and said "Mom...you do know that there are people in there, don't you? They aren't REAL animals! They just wear costumes...like Halloween."

I had never said anything about it but she seemed to know anyway.

The entire time we were in WDW 2 weeks ago 6 y/o DS kept saying. Are they real? When I asked him what he thought he said that he thought there were people in the costumes but the other ones...Cinderella..Hercules etc. HAD to be the real ones.

Good Thinking!

Awwwww, they grow up too fast Mark, but what a great answer! :)

Awww...it's so sad when they stop "believing"....but do they?...completely? I still believe....in the magic of Disney, the power of a dream, and that if you keep "magic" in your heart it will always "be real". I think alot of us here pass all of these gifts along to our kids....bet you do too Mark!

Oh how true. I can't tell you the number of times we've heard that our kids won't remember our trips. It's sad. I hope they always remember the wonderful memories - even if they are buried deep beneath all the "other stuff" we adults have to carry around with us.

you know...when i'm at home, i KNOW that mickey mouse is just someone in a costume...but when i'm at WDW or DL and i see mickey mouse...i swear he's real!! i know it's weird...but i can't help it!! i get so caught up in the magic and there's nothing you could say to convince me otherwise!!!

btw...i'm 29... how pitiful is that?!
and i have no children yet...even worse, huh? lol

I recorded the WDW Christmas parade on Tivo, and DSs 5 and 7 just watched it the other day. I overheard them talking about how there are people in the costumes. They were quite matter-of-fact about it. They both just seemed to know (not one telling the other). I, on the other hand, am devastated. I am so glad that we took WDW trips while DSs were young enough to still believe. They may not be able to remember every trip, but I will always remember how special those trips were.

We are going on the Disney cruise in 2 weeks and it will be interesting to see if DSs are still excited about seeing the characters.

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh....

Even if they're not excited, I know you are! Have a GREAT cruise and get a massage in the beach cabana.

What are you trying to say? Costumes? People?

WHAT----- WHOS NOT REAL???
costumes???? WHAT ?? OH MY HEAD HURTS!!!!!

I believe they must be real! Why else would I be knocked over, pushed, and stepped on by others trying to get their autographs if it was all just some kind of horrible fraud?
