I know I've read a thread about this, but after searching I can't seem to find it. So please, bear with me.

I have a studio booked on points (I'm renting them) and I am looking to upgrade to a 1 br. The wdw reservation system shows availability, however the dvc owner who I'm renting from says there are none available.

Am I right to assume that point rooms have different stock than cash reservation rooms? Do they open up at any point, in order to fill them?

Yes, DVC Point rooms and cash rooms are different inventory.

Cash rooms are available from several sources:

1) Points retained by DVC/Disney. A small portion of points of all DVC resorts remain in the hands of Disney for maintenance issues. If the rooms are not needed for maintenance, they are available for cash.

2) Unsold Points AKA Developers Inventory, these points are whatever remain unsold, or are taken back through foreclosure, Right of First Refusal, owner Defaults, etc. The room represented by these points are available for cash, or are used for promotions, like when someone wins a WDW trip on Funniest Videos...and maybe some of the families from Home Makeover.

3) Member Trades: When a DVC Member trades to another Disney venue, like Adventures by Disney or a cruise, those points are turned over to cash rooms to offset the cost of the destination.

4) Breakage Inventory, the smallest of the cash room categories, and DVC inventory rooms not reserved on points are made available to cash at 60 days. A portion of this income is used to offset some of our annual dues costs. These are the only cash rooms available to both DVC and cash reservations, but they are rarely available.

Your best chance to change to a one bedroom is at 30 days prior to arrival, when many DVCers cancel any reservation that they can not use before they go into holding status.

Also, with the DVC system, you cannot "upgrade" to a 1BR. If you want a 1BR, the member would have to cancel the studio reservation and make a new one for 1BR at the 1BR cost. That change can be made only if 1BRs are still available at time member calls to make the change.

Or if a waitlist request is made....

And if the waitlist comes through, you owe the member a bunch more money. A one bedroom is about double the number of points as a studio. Maybe even more depending on the season.
