Putting movies on iPad? Renting vs. buying, etc.

We're taking our iPad to WDW, and would like to put a handful of movies on it for the flight, etc. 2 part question:

Part A) I see the newer movies are around $18, which I find way to pricey. Renting is about $5. But I don't know how it works through iTunes. Do we only have it for a certain period of time...can only watch it once.... etc. We only have wifi, will I be able to rent it and then watch it when we're out of range?

Part B) Is there anyway to get a DVD we already own onto the ipad?? Or is there another program out there that will allow me to purchase movies cheaper than iTunes?

Renting is really easy. It does take awhile (20 min?) for it to download from iTunes. Yes, you can watch the rented movie without a wifi connection. It's on your iPad. Yes, you can watch it as many times as you want but after the 24 hrs is up, it goes away. You don't need to do anything to get it off. So, as soon as you start the rented movie , you have 24 hrs to finish it.

Also, I'm not sure how big your Ipad is but a movie takes up a lot of space . I have a 16gb iPad and can usually put 2 movies on it ( along with my apps).

Correct, we do this with rentals all the time.

If you lost the code, and it is a Disney DVD I have had luck calling the phone number on the back of the DVD case. I bought a DVD of Nightmare Before Christmas and sisn't do the digital copy for 2 years! I lost the little slip with the code, called Disney and read them the serial # on the box and they gave me the code over the phone.

Yes, that is correct! If you are using Wi-fi to rent your movie, it will take about 20 minutes or so for it to download the rental. You will have 24hrs after you start playing the movie to watch it as many times as you want. You don't have to start the movie the same day you "rent" it. We did this for our trip to Disney also. We rented two movies the night before our flight, watched one on the plane, and watched the other one in our resort room during our stay at Disney. We loved it!

I don't know if you're staying on-site or off, but if you have Wi-fi in your room at Disney, you can most likely delete the movies you've already watched and then rent another movie while you're there if you want more than the two you started with. I'm not 100% sure if the connection is fast enough to not take forever to download, but someone might know.

You said you had a 16gb iPad...I would recommend clearing off everything you won't be using for your trip so you have maximum storage. We have a 64gb so we have tons of room but my mother-in-law has a 16gb and hers is always full (she puts photos & some music on hers, as well as games though).

quite a few free programs online that you can use to put your own movies on the ipad. There is some question about the morality of this, so I won't get into the details. To me, if I own it, I own it, I'm not sure it should matter what device I watch it on.

Anyway, check out youtube for tutorials. I watched a teenager talk me through it and now we do it all the time.

Also, if you look around on itunes there are often a lot of free shows. A quick google search and I found: Pound Puppies Yipper Caper. My kids have found quite few this way. I think they change often so keep looking. "Incredible Crew" has some free things too if your kids are older. Go to itunes, then TV, then free and see what is there.

I uploaded 3 movies onto my iPad prior to our last trip and I was really glad I did as the DVD player in our villa was broken! If you need wi-fi mid flight (say for like the free Disney Junior App) you can also do that on a lot of carriers now. Our Southwest flight offered it for $5. So if you wan't variety that's an option for a low cost. The digital copies are great but keep in mind they fill up your iPad quickly, so renting is good in that aspect. Either way have a fun trip!

You can't download these to an Ipad...you can stream them over wifi with the VuDu app, but no downloading.

The kids never watched the rented ones and they expired.

You have 30 days from the time you download the movie to start the 24 hour viewing period.

I've tried a lot of these, both on my Mac and PC, and sometimes they work, sometimes not. Newer movies seem to have copy harder to decode copy protection.

Yes, Amazon, but the movies aren't always cheaper.

The process is cumbersome: you first have to go to amazon and buy a digital copy of the movie. You then have to load the Amazon app on the Ipad. You then have to download the movie manually in the ipad app. And I currently have a current generation Ipad, and the amazon app would only download the movie while the app was open and active. So no doing anything else on the ipad while that movie is downloading.

After all this, I've decided that sticking with the apple/itunes method is easiest and best.

It's been my experience (at AKV and BWV) that the wi-fi is not good for streaming. It serves its purpose for checking emails and changing your ADRs on the old Disney website. But Netflix didn't work and I couldn't Facetime.

I have a large number of movies on my iPad. They take up anywhere from 1-1.5 GB each. Some are digital copies that I got with the purchase of the DVD and others were purchased as digital copies only.

If you want to put movies on an iPad it has to be in the format that the iPad uses. It's easiest to go through iTunes to do this (which is probably why they are so expensive to purchase that way). To watch Amazon videos on the iPad, you have to open them with a free app that you can get on iTunes. Amazon is always offering free video credits for making purchases or doing things like registering for emails. Right now, they're offering a $5 credit if you register your Wii. That will buy you half a movie or allow you to stream 1.5 movies.

I will add that there are ways to convert DVDs that you own to a digital copy. Walmart offers this service but not for every movie. There is also software out there that can be used to convert DVDs to digital files. I'm not convinced that this is legal to do with copywrited material. It's kind of a nebulous area. But if you do a google search, I'm sure that you'll find all sorts of freeware and software for purchase that will do the job.

You can expand your storage with a wi-drive. It acts as a mini hotspot of sorts. The files are stored on the wi-drive and you use an app on your iPad to access it. My iPad has 64GB of space but I got a Kingston Wi-Drive 64 GB USB 2.0 Pocket-sized Portable Storage from Amazon when it was on sale before Christmas. I store the movies on there and they can be shared by up to 3 devices simultaneously.

One device you may want to look into purchasing is a Seagate GoFlex Satellite. It is an external hard drive that you can store hundreds of digital movies on (or whatever else you want to store). It creates its own little wifi (the wifi does not let you access the internet, only the information stored on the external hard drive) and can be accessed by up to three devices at once. We use it in the car for road trips and on planes that allow wi-fi (most of them do now). My boys can each watch their own movie on their iPods while DH and I watch another movie on the iPad. It's a pretty neat gizmo . We now have pretty large library (I would guess around a hundred movies) that we carry with us on the GoFlex whenever we take a trip. We have DirecTV for our cable provider and they after a service called Nomad that lets you download shows and movies from your DVR. We were able to put several shows and movies on our iPads, iPhones, etc before a recent trip. The download is slow, so we made sure to do it several days before we left so we had no issue.

I didnt know that, I have a tablet (with a memory card) In my case can I store movies on my memory card?

There is another option
You can purchase a dvd converter. Its about $40. I have used it for the last four or five years. Its really user friendly. The joy of this program is that you can not only load your own dvds but you can load any dvd you rent from blockbuster.
