DS (2) has been having breathing problems recently. We took him to the doc for his two year check up and she had some blood test run to find out if he's allergic to anything. Turns out he's allergic to dogs. I love my doggy to death, but I love my DS more and I don't want him to suffer all these complications he's been having, so I think we're going to have to get rid of the dog. I don't just want to give him away to just anyone who will take him though, so does anyone know the best way to go about this. Can I just call an animal shelter and ask them if they can find a home for him or something???

Have you thought of allergy shots for you son? When I was a kid I was allergic to many things, including my dog. I got shots every week ~ we could never have given up our dog.:( she was part of our family.

Well, if you want to surrender your dog to a shelter in your town, you want to find a no-kill shelter so your dog won't be euthanized. You may have to wait for them to have room to take your dog. You can ask them how they screen potential adopters so your dog will go to a good home. Also ask them if the people who adopt from the shelter can return the dog if it doesn't work out.

There are nasty people out there who take free pets that people are giving away and sell them to test labs and such. Don't just give your dog away free unless you really know the person taking him. It's part of the reason why shelters charge a fee for adopting a pet. They have to cover their costs, obviously, but they need to make sure that the pet is worth something to the person adopting it.

I'm sorry to hear about your news! I don't have any advice--just

What kind of dog is it, and where did you get it from? Most reputable breeders will take a dog of their breeding back at any time for any reason. If your dog is purebred, there are breed rescues for every breed under the sun. Even if your dog is a mixed breed, there are rescue groups that will find a good home. Not all animal shelters are created equal, some will keep adoptable dogs forever until they find a home, some will PTS after a certain period of time.

You didn't mention what kind of dog is it? There are breed rescue groups & even for mixed breeds. Hypothetically speaking, if you have a Golden Retriever or a mixed Golden, you could find a golden ret. rescue group in your state or internet and could possibly locate a loving family. Our dog is a GoldenDoodle (Golden X Std. Poodle) and there is a website for this mixed breed with a rescue page & people often post rescue poodles, labs & goldens on this site. Call your local humane society & see if there is a local rescue group. I would first try to find a home before taking it to a shelter because you never know if it's going to get a home. I hope this helps & good luck.

Phillybeth, looks like we posted @ the same time & just about the same thoughts. weird

His name is Stitch and he's a Chi. He's the most adorable, playful dog ever. I would love to keep him, but those allergy shots sound like too much for a two year old. The problem isn't just sneezing and running noses. The reason we had to have the tests done was because we started noticing him gasping for air. He looked like he had just ran a marathon or something. We took him to the doc and she heard weazing in his lungs and suggested it was most likely asthma. Since it has been something that just came up, she thought it was most likely some kind of allergy induced asthma and that's why she ran the tests.

BTW, just to add, I completely understand your decision. I am a volunteer foster home (among other things) for a breed rescue, and I just had a foster dog adopted- a 4 month old pup surrendered because the son wound up in the hospital 3 times in 3 weeks with asthma attacks right after they bought the puppy. Rescue people are non-judgmental, and all we are interested in is finding good homes for these precious pups.

You can post a classified ad on www.petfinder.com, that way you'd get to choose the home he goes too. I'm sure you'll have no problem since he's younger and a small dog.

I got my Cody from a cocker spaniel rescue group. He was a year old and is the sweetest thing. He's been spoiled rotten (by me)and I thank the people who gave him up to a rescue instead of just dumping him.

PhillyBeth, maybe were twins separated at birth or were having a twilight zone experience or maybe - great minds think alike::yes:: :teeth:

We had a similar experience with our son. He had allergy induced asthma with our lab. In my opinion, a dog is an animal, our son's health is more important. I was not willing to require my son to receive weekly shots in order to keep our animal (even though we loved the dog very much). We found a lab rescue organization, who placed him with a very nice woman. We didn't dump the dog, but ensured he was in a happy home, and that our son would be able to breathe. You've gotten some good recommendations here. I'm sorry you and your son had to go through this.

I agree with maybe trying Petfinder.com. I believe it is free to post an ad. We found our puppy there and we traveled three hours to pick her up but it was worth it. I talked to the lady quite a few times on the phone and I think we were both satisfied that the puppy would have a good home. Good luck.

Please, please, please contact a local rescue group....I would imagine if you feel you can't get the dog to them, that someone would be willing to go to you. Most rescue groups have good homes that are already screened and are waiting for a dog to love. These people already have been educated in the breed and it's special needs, etc. It is the best solution IMO.

Good luck!

A few weeks ago we were in a Tarrant county Petsmart and a Chihuahua rescue group was there with some dogs. They were so cute! I really want to get another dog as a companion for our Boston Terrier mix puppy (adopted from rescue), but DH really doesn't want another dog. Maybe someday. Anyway, I got a business card from the Chihuahua group which may be of help to you:

Chihuahua Rescue & Transport, Inc.

PLEASE contact a rescue group. These people are heroes IMO. They really care about animals. They go through a very rigorous screening process to make sure that the dogs get good homes. They ask LOTS of questions and check references. Your dog will find a wonderful new home.
