Purchasing used points

Hi, me and my husband are thinking about buying used points for the BWV. I know you can go through some agencies to do that. Can I do this through DVC as well?

If we buy used points can we use them in conjunction with our existing points? We have 125 points with VGF.

How does that work?

I know I sound nuts but I really want to have points for the BWV ;)

You can buy BWV point via re-sale either at DVC direct (if they're available) or an outside agency. If you purchase outside you will have to go through the ROFR process which could take a little time.

Yes, you can use the points from both to book. That being said, you could only use them together at the 7 month mark.

The only reason i would want to combine the points is if we were going to a Disney resort outside of Orlando like Aulani. That would be 7 months out for us anyway.

them used points wear almost as good as brand new!

the other side would be that even if you pay for shiny brand new pts from disney, you'll still be using them to book an already used BWV villa. (used many times...)

while you can buy BWV from disney directly, since disney is the developer, by definition you cannot buy "resale" from them.

you would need to buy the same UY month and title the BWV contract the same as your VGF contract to make things easier. (if you buy direct, disney will require that you get the same UY unless you buy enough pts to qualify for a completely new membership).

You can buy "re-sale" from an exisitng member usually through a resale broker such as the The Timeshare Store which is a sponsor of this site and you can view what it has avaialble by just going to the top of the page you are on now and click on The Timeshare Store. Current asking prices for BWV are in the $82 range.

Alternatively, you can buy "new" from Disney, even though it is a previously sold out resort like BWV, because Disney gets points back via right of first refusal or foreclosures. It takes trhe points and puts them back into the system for sale and thus can sell them new again in any allowed increments, e.g., if it gets back from an owner a 200 point contract it can sell those as eight new and separate 25 point contracts. The current price through Disney for Boardwalk points is $155, i.e., 89% higher than the resale market.

If you buy resale from another member, you will have to go through Disney's right of first refusal, which allows it to buy the contract for the same price that you offer the seller, with the result that you gain nor lose anything other than the time spent doing the resale. In the majority of cases Disney waives ROFR and allows the resale to occur. Also,a resale purchaser has to wait until after closing to get into the DVC system and be able to reserve and that can take up to a few weeks after closing. As a resale purchaser you will not have the ability to use those points for trading out to the Disney Collections: non-DVC Disney Hotels (other than at Disneyland), the Cruise, the Disney Adventures or the Disney concierge collection hotels. That is a perk for purchasers from Disney that could be taken away from them at any time and is not considered by most existing members to be of any real value including because the points needed for those trade outs are already high and can and usually do increase annually. Otherwise, you will be just like any other member, able to reserve DVC rooms or trade out through RCI.

If instead you choose to go through Disney, the process will be quiicker, easy to get but high interest financing is available, you can use the Disney Collections and you will be able to make a DVC reservation with the new points for a time after closing right after you agree to purchase. In other words, for the benefit of having an easier process, easy to get high financing, and having the Disney Collections as a possible trade out, you only have to pay an extra $73 a point buying from Disney rather than through resale.

I definitely prefer to go through DVC.

I told my DH I wont to be at Epcot for xmas one day, it is on my bucket list :thumbsup2

What's your reasoning for only wanting to buy direct? You can save a whole bunch by buying resale. Disney will charge you almost the same as what they charge for a new resort. And the benefits just aren't there.

I want to do what is easier but if I can save a ton we can use a broker. I just want to make it will add to my account.

You just need to buy the same UY and title it the same. Then when you get to closing, your agent needs to inform Disney of your existing member ID so it can be added as an add-on, not a new membership.

Even if you buy a sold out resort from Disney, it may take a while for them to get a contract to match your use year.

It's almost double through DVC compared to resale.

We will be at the VGF this coming October, we will take a tour of that resort. I have seen a few photos so far I like what I see.

Buying a sizable contract at a classic resort direct from Disney makes no reasonable financial sense in any situation. Some people try to use a car sales analogy, and that basically holds with these clarifications:

What you need to understand is that buying BWV resale versus direct from Disney isn't at all like buying a new versus a used car. What it is like is buying the same used car, either private party for a reasonable price, or from a car dealer for DOUBLE that price, with free oil changes thrown in.

Only in the case of a classic resort, the "free oil changes" are options to use your points for ridiculously expensive trade-outs like DCL or ABD.

The only circumstance IMO where buying a classic resort direct makes sense is if you want a very small add-on (say 25 points) at a resort you already own, and cannot find that in your UY via resale. In all other circumstances, you're literally throwing away thousands of dollars for nothing.

One can have a reasonable discussion about buying a new or almost-new resort direct (currently VGF and PVB). For everything else, direct purchase is only reasonable if you're a billionaire, where throwing away thousands of dollars means nothing to you. And in which case, you probably wouldn't be buying DVC anyway.
