Purchasing student instrument vs renting

Not sure if someone has mentioned it or not, but I would check local music shops. When I was in middle school (6th-8th grade) my parents "rented to own" a saxophone for me. They paid a smallish 60$ish a month and as long as I was in the class it was mine until it was paid for.

We did the rent to own with my son's trumpet...and I am glad we did. We have had it in for 3 repairs so far in 3 years. All of them for damage:confused3 He has managed to jam the mouthpiece in so far his teacher couldn't get it out and banged up the bell end. Damage like he did is covered for repairs.

You can purchase quality flutes on ebay. Besides it is inexpensive and better than renting. And you can own it.

I'm a professional; the recommendations so far in the thread are good advice. For a beginner, a Gemeinhardt, Artley, Yamaha, Jupiter, or Pearl flute would be great choices. I'll second the recommendation for the Gemeinhardt 2SP, it'll last for years and is a decent student horn.

OP- did you get the Armstrong this morning? As long as it's in good working order, it'll be ABSOLUTELY FINE for a first flute!!! :goodvibes

Hi Yes I did. She had recently had it looked over and some repairs done to it to make sure it was working good. a new head cork, two pads replaced and dents removed from the head piece. She also sold it to me for $150. So a significant savings. And if I have any problems with it I can bring it back to her. My husband has done work for her in the past and since he gives them deals she passed it back to me! So I'm crossing my fingers it will be good enough for her teacher. My DD was very excited this morning and has all ready been making some noise (definitely can't say music yet!).

Thanks again to all for your help! I really appreciate it!
