Purchasing AP online question

If I purchase my AP online today, but don't go to the parks until April, does my AP "begin" today or does the 1 year start when I first go into the park?

It starts when you activate it at the park.

Follow-up question. Can your first day still be on a block-out day? Or does that trick only apply to APs purchased in person?

Yes. Blockout days never apply on your first visit. When you go to the ticket booth to exchange your voucher for your AP they will give you a "Blockout Day Exception" pass. You will have to show that along with your AP each time you enter the parks.
