My father wants to buy my family's plane tickets for a late Christmas present ... Can he do that even if he isn't going on the trip?

He could purchase a gift card for future use, most airlines offer them.
Or you could book your flights and use his credits card and info to pay for them, he does not have to be traveling.
I purchase tickets for family members regularly.

I wouldn't have to show his credit card or anything At the airport??

No, you won't hav eto show his CC.

You'll have to show your ID at security, with a government issued ID with the name matching the name on the boarding pass. That's it.

Think of it this way: company travel agents buy tickets all the time with credit cards that are not in the actual traveler name.
