Purchasing add on in-person vs phone?

I've closed on my first resale purchase and am going to purchase my first add on ASAP.

I have a non-Disney trip to Orlando next weekend (which would be 1.5 weeks after my closing), is there any point in me stopping by a Preview/Sales Center to try and purchase my add on?

I'm purchasing SSR, Oct use year. I hope that SSR points may be available immediately, though I completely understand if I have to be waitlisted.

Are there any benefits to doing it in person vs over the phone?

I am aware of the benefits of buying direct (i.e. speed of getting points), I'm just looking for any differences purchasing in-person vs over the phone.

Thanks!

We did the exact same thing as you and did it over the phone. We paid with a credit card over the phone and the documents were sent to us right away. We overnighted them back and the points were in our account within 7 days after getting the call from our guide that points were available. We added on at SSR, too, and was on a waitlist for our UY for about a week.

I would call my guide and ask, you should have one if you have closed and are in the system. If by phone, get your guide to agree to give you your buying perks on your next vacation. Maybe fast passes, a tote bag, ice cream, or other.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm not sure what info I have to confirm that I am "in the system" other than the information from the comptroller website. I guess I will call DVC by the beginning of next week and see if they'll let me purchase an add-on or add me to the waitlist without me having a membership number. Perhaps... this can be a way to get my membership number a little earlier =)

I just thought since I was in the WDW area anyway I would just walk in, wave my hands in the air and say "Hello! Easy commission standing here! ::MickeyMo"

You aren't buying from MS/DVC you would be buying from DVD, different unit/department. You need to get your account set up first so contact MS. After set up, call your guide. Don't mention resale to your guide or he/she may never find your SSR points.

Understood about the different departments: DVD vs MS/DVC.

Clarity needed on the latter though... I've read here in the forums to not mention resale to a guide, but in my case I am now in the market for a direct contract. I should still not mention that I bought my first contract via resale? I don't plan on mentioning it ("It's better to be silent than to be a fool" -Harper Lee), I'm just curious for the reasoning for it. Thanks Bill!

The advantage of "in-person" is that you can learn about DVC and "kick the tires" by seeing model villas from Poly, Aulani, BWV, BLT, CCV, etc.
The advantage of doing it by phone is that it is quick and painless, and you do not waste vacation time.

Once your account gets updated, your guide will know that you bought resale. As far as my comment, you are now the guide, I contact you to buy a small contract so you suspect that I am a resale owner. You verify it in your system and are upset that Disney continues to let this happen, more money that you need for your family has gone out the window. You put it behind you and try to move on. During my contact I bring up the fact that I just bought resale and now I want a small contract just to get the perks, sorry that you have to do the same work as selling me a large contract but you get peanuts on my sale.

Better to not bring it up and if your guide does, just move on, you still need him to find you the SSR points and he may just not find the time to do so. On the other hand you could get a senior guide who has years of experience and understands the way the game is played. It took us three tries to find our guide, bought a few contracts from him but many more resale and he still calls to say hi when we are at WDW.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I viewed this whole process differently, as I would have thought Disney would be happy to just take my money when I so openly offer it to them. Completely understand the guide's having a little bit of hostility at resale buyers.

Time to "kill 'em with kindness!"
