So I plan on purchasing points (24) for a vacation at 6 months out to complete my reservation.
What happens to those extra points I purchased if I have to cancel? Do I lose them ? Is there a time limit they have to be spent by? Can they only be used on another less than 7 month reservation? Can I ever bank them?

OTU points are good for the UY of the trip you bought them for originally,

So, if you cancel, you can use them for any other trip booked 7 months or less within that same UY.

I had purchased points that were attached to bookings cancelled becasue of Covid park closings. Sorry to say, I was told I had to get a refund after 2nd cancellation. That they had expired. Long story short, never got it. I was told to call one department, that was no longer taking phone calls. I had to email. I did; even got a call back. But, no refund ever came. I gave up, frankly. I should call again. A little over $200. They kept saying they had to reseach it, that they don't keep track of it? I suspect it is related to offices closing from Covid, people working from home, I don't know.

My recommendation is to keep very careful track of them. I was lazy about it, bought them, reserved the room, never expecting to cancel. Then had to call to rebook to use for the 2nd time, could not do it online. Then after THAT was cancelled, I had to wait until they cancelled the resevation, and that is when they disppeared.

I realize I sound like a careless kook here. Sigh.

Lol
No you have opened my eyes on what could occur.
Thank you 😊

Can Iask how much it costs? I'm short 25 points for a trip in January because of the 50% rule.

You can purchase up to 24 OTU points @ $19/pt once you're within the 7 month window.
Are those purchased through DVC at the time of reservation? I’m looking to book a 5 room reservation tomorrow (11 months out) and will be short 15 points.

Yes, you have to call MS to purchase when booking a room. If you are booking more than one room, to make it easier online, you could call today, book one of the rooms starting today and ask to purchase OTU points...the 15...it doesn’t matter if you still have other points to use.

Then tomorrow you can book the rest online. Then go in and modify the one made today with OTU and move it forward a day.

If you are talking about a 5 night and not 5 rooms, then book what you can and call MS to purchase and add the last night.

Ignore my response,....you edited after to say you are booking 11 months out.

My answer only works if you are booking 7 months or less feom checkin.
