We have a 13 month old malise named Snickers. He is one of the most affectionate dogs around, and we love him dearly, BUT he frequently REFUSES to potty outside. We take him out often, praise he lots when he goes outside and scold him when he makes a mess in the house.....We've tried just about everything we can think of........Does anyone have any good ideas or advice?

TIA,

We were so lucky with George. He is a 5-month-old papillon, and he's already potty trained!

We would make sure that we took him out every few hours without fail, and we would stand out there with him until he would go. We would also take him outside immediately after he finished eating.

Good luck!

Does he have accidents while you're home or just while you're away? Have you thoroughly cleaned (do you have carpet?) where the accidents happened? Even if you can't smell it anymore, chances are if you have carpet that he can. If he smells it, he thinks it is his potty.

Does he have a crate?

we just got a pug about a month ago and although he is not trained fully yet he is getting there. Our last pug loved cheese so we have been using that as an incentive for this one, we take him out frequently and when he goes to the bathroom outside he gets a little piece of cheese. Pugdog is right about the carpet, once they go there its like radar for them, they smell it even if you don't. I think the pet store may have some sort of spray that may deter them from going in the house. If all else fails ask the vet, maybe he has some kind of bladder problem. Right now, our dog is teething I guess, so he is a biter, so we are trying to deal with that problem. If you have any suggestions on that let me know, Good luck with Snickers!!! btw-great name!!:flower1:

Take a black light to the carpet. You will be "un" pleasantly surprised I'm sure. When you see where the stains are, flood with Nature's Miracle (you can find at most pet stores.) Towel dry & put a fan to it. Once dry, check it again with the black light.

If all else fails, move into a house with all hardwood floors like I did.

My 15.5 month old dog is still doing it on the carpet although less often than when he was a puppy. I still don't trust him wandering the house whether I'm home or out.

Thanks for all thee quick replies. Snickers does have a crate, and he won't go in there....we do have carpet, and I will try cleaning it again. Honesyly, with our dog, it deems like he does this when he's mad that he doesn't have our undivided attention......I wish we knoew hat to do to break him of these habits.....
