Wow! DH finally relented and said we could have another animal. We have a small dog (inside/outside) and a cat (strictly inside). I have been wanting a retriever or a retriever mix for quite some time. I had two in the past, both Golden Retrievers. I loved them both dearly, although they were both goofy as can be. I don't mean they were goofy in an unintelligent way. In general, they were just very fun-loving, silly and very active.

So the dog we got is half Springer Spaniel and half Golden Retriever. Her hair is long and wavy like a golden, but she is black in color. She is so pretty. We brought her home last night. She is about 4 1/2 months old and she is much bigger than I anticipated. Since she is an older puppy, she came to us already named. Her name is Bella. I think she will grow bigger than my previous two retrievers. Her legs are very long and sturdy with rather large feet. Either I'm not remembering how big my retrievers were in the past, or this is the springer spaniel in her. Her ears are definitely not retriever ears. They are very long.

Our house is not puppy-proofed! It is certainly not puppy-proofed for a large puppy. This much I discovered very quickly. Bella picks up anything she can get her mouth on. DS is horrible about just dropping things when he is through with them. And the cat thinks DS's Legos are things to bat around, so there are Legos EVERYWHERE. I think we've gotten them all up now. This morning, Bella brought me small package of Smarties candy. No idea where that even came from. I have been following her around constantly. She thinks everything is a chew toy, including my laptop and cell phone. I understand that is very normal for a puppy. Thank God she slept through the night in her kennel. I really thought she would wake me up having to go outside.

DD has a large mirror on the wall in our dining room. Bella walked into the house last night and spotted her reflection immediately. Apparently, her previous humans never showed her a mirror. She still isn't sure about that "other dog". Every time she walks past that mirror, she stops and stares at it for a minute with her ears erect. Well of course, that "other dog" is staring back at her. :rotfl: So this angers Bella and she growls and barks. It is quite funny and I managed to get a few minutes of it on video. Bless her little heart. She is a very clunky girl and gets ahead of herself when she moves. She keeps hitting her head on things. It doesn't seem to bother her in the least.

DS has a medical appointment today so Bella will wait till later in the week to go to the vet for her checkup. Her previous human family is sending her vet records today. She is up to date on her shots, so I'm not concerned she has any immediate problems. Oh, but she snores. Goodness, does she snore! :scared: I was really worried when I first heard it. I was convinced it was some sort of death rattle. When I checked on her, she was sound asleep with her body contorted in a strange position. Once she repositioned herself, the snoring stopped.

Anyway, we love her already and are so happy to have her as part of our family. I will very quickly introduce her to the fenced backyard later today so I can puppy proof the house for her. Having had puppies in the past, I know what to expect and how to prepare. It's been so long since I had a large puppy, I guess I just forgot how much they get into. She is very much like a large, rambunctious toddler right now. But she seems to love me in return already. This morning, she sat on the ottoman in front of me and just stared into my face while I rubbed her big, floppy ears. :goodvibes

Rule one puppy doesn't exist without photos! I want to see Bella!

She sounds adorable and will settle in nicely. How is your other dog adjusting to her?

Congrats on your new puppy. We adopted a Boykin spaniel mixed with a black lab and she has been a real joy to our family. Mary

Golden retrievers & mixed retrievers are so very cute!!! I have a pure bred golden retriever male named Yogi. He's extremely goofy and fun loving. The things he gets into just makes me laugh! Your dog sounds cute, i'd love to see pics.

Retriever puppies are a lot of work. Our dog chewed up our wooden coffee table, several slippers, a pipe in the basement, and he tore the mesh off of the sliding door leading to the back yard. Apparently he was upset that we left him in the yard alone for too long. LOL! He tore the mesh right off! For years we went without a mesh on the sliding door, never bothered to get it fixed. Not too long ago we finally got the mesh replaced. Oh boy, our dog wasnt use to it at all. He ran right thru the mesh! Twice! In one week!!! Needless to say, we keep the screen door open and dont use the mesh door at all anymore....we only close the glass door portion. I think our goofy dog thinks running thru the mesh is fun. :lmao:

Theyre great dogs. Just a lot of work as puppies. We used that bitter spray on everything, but apparently it didnt bother my dog at all. Lol. Good luck to you! :thumbsup2

They sure are like babies/toddlers. We just adopted a yellow lab mix who's 14 mos. old. He is still very lively and loves to chew on things. He loves to sneak in dd room to grab a fuzzy slipper or stuffed animal and is obsessed with her earmuffs. :rotfl:

We can't leave anything on the coffee table or end table without watching him. Took him to my parents house and he grabbed a pinecone and small pine branch off their coffe table and ran around like crazy with it. He did leave is alone later though. Everything new he has to grab or try out though. He loves to eat pencils and pens. :headache: Took a while for us to puppy proof again.

At what age does the chewing/grabbing of stuff slow down? I haven't had a pup for years and don't remember. My last dog was 2 when adopted him and he rarely chewed.

OP good luck your pup sounds adorable!

I will have to get DD to send me some pics from her phone. My phone is horrible for picture taking and I have somehow lost my memory card to my camera.

Our other dog is not really sure how to react just yet. It has just been him for so long. Then the cat came along, and he is positive he doesn't like the cat. :rotfl2: The two dogs played a little this morning. Bella seems to know "her place" in relation to Pops (the other dog). Just to give you a frame of reference, he is tiny and weighs about 5 pounds. Every time he tried to sniff her, she hid behind me. So here is this huge, clunky puppy that can easily reach my face when she stands on her hind legs and she stands behind me for protection from this tiny little purse puppy. The cat hates Bella. She is certain of this and needs no further information on which to base her opinion. Bella just wants to play with both of them, really. I think she will do fine with the other dog over time. The cat? I'll be happy if we can just have a truce.

goofyintoronto, my last golden did the same thing with the doors! She would run right through the mesh on the sliding door. We replaced it a few times before we finally gave up.

Fly4free, that sounds hilarious about the pine cone and branch! I can imagine the scene. My last two retrievers settled down eventually, but I can't really remember how long it took. I think part of it is just a personality. They are working dogs so I think they just need lots of activity. If we humans don't meet that need, they will figure out how to occupy their time and expend energy on their own.

I totally understand, OP. I just got a new puppy too. I don't know where he's finding half the stuff I've caught him with. There's so many things I didn't even think about him getting into that seem to interest him.

I uploaded the video of her episode with the mirror to youtube. Am I allowed to post a link to that?

You forget how busy they are until you get one again. Good luck with your new addition. :goodvibes

Oh yay! Thank you!

It is very simply titled "Bella sees the other dog" if anyone else wants to see it.

Oh, we had a Golden Retriever/Springer Spaniel mix that we loved so much! Her name was Maggie and she lived to be 14, she's been gone almost 2 years now and we still miss her dearly. We wish we could find another dog with that same mix, of course, it would probably have a different personality, but we really did like those 2 breeds mixed together.

Your dog looks a lot like our Maggie did, but, Maggie was about that size full grown and her fur was a lot longer, more like a Golden Retriever, but her ears were long, longer than your dogs, more like the Springer ears, very curly. Maggie didn't have as deep a bark as your dog either. She was all black too with a little white on her chest.

Maggie always picked up everything on the floor as a puppy, but she never chewed on it. She was worse with this as a puppy, but even as she grew up she always would carry something around in her mouth until you noticed and told her to drop it! She never chewed though. Our Maggie was a wonderful companion, never left the yard, always wanted to be by your side. We still haven't gotten another dog, we may this year. It's been hard!

I've enjoyed hearing about your dog and remembering mine. Hope you have many happy years to come!! :) :goodvibes

Aww, she sounds like she was a great girl. This morning, I caught Bella carrying my 20 ounce bottle of Diet Dr Pepper. She didn't chew the bottle, though. I wonder if that is a product of breeding in those sporting dogs. I told DH I may get some duck decoys or something similar for her to play with. She is most certainly not satisfied with the "puppy" toys we have right now. She has rather enjoyed retrieving a whiffle ball a lot today.

Yes, they do like retrieving things, it's in their blood I think. Maggie would take things from room to room for us. I would give her something and tell her to take it to DH in the other room. She could even take cans of beer! She was a lot of fun. And such a great dog. My DH took our Maggie duck hunting for many years.

Your puppy is so cute! I love her ears. She is very big.

We got a new lab puppy in late November, and he is a little over 3 months old now. We say he is just like a baby too. He gets into everything like a toddler, and we always know when he is getting tired because he starts running around the room going crazy just like an overtired child and then just drops to the floor to sleep :)

Bella has been doing the same thing. She just runs and runs! Then she plops down and sleeps. Today she found some Legos, a Dum Dum wrapper, and a sparkly Christmas ornament (which she wanted to play fetch with). Oh she makes me tired. But she is great! Today, she fell asleep on DD's tummy.
