I've never heard of Turnip carving before; were Pumpkins scarce back then?

Not to say your old or anything; your only as old as you feel!

I'm 37, and with happy memories of burnt turnip and a pocketful of 2p pieces. I'd never seen a pumpkin until I was about 20.

My Mum is saying that we should do them tonight, but we normally do them on the night itself. I haven't a clue when other people do it, so I thought I'd ask for some advice..

My mum cooks them into things like soups, pies etc. We are having a Halloween Fest tommorrow, and it's all thanks to our pumpkin inards.

I normally do mine on the night, but as I have "time" on my hands at the moment I will be doing them tomorrow morning. If you do them tonight I would stand the carved pumpkin in an inch of water...this will stop it going wrinkly over the next 24 hours.

Same age as me, I'm originally from cumbria, this is exactly what I remember too! And coming home from the cold night to share the copper coins out on the rug in front of the fire between 3 or 4 friends! My mam would make stew with the turnip!!

Not a sweet or pumpkin in sight! I do remember watching halloween charlie brown and wishing I had a pumpkin as I looked at the blisters on my little hands after hours or using a knife and spoon (!) to hack out that bloody large turnip!!

Kids have it too easy now!

Ours are done now, and we are doing what you said Rich and are putting them in some water tonight.

I will post pictures of them tommorrow in action.
