Hi Everyone!

Well, I’ve been lurking on these boards for years. I’ve spent hours reading about other people’s adventures and exciting journeys. When we were thinking about taking this trip I searched on here for any and all trip reports that included travel with an infant and tried to learn from everyone else’s “lessons learned.” We set out on a magical adventure in our happy place and found that it’s a whole new world to us as a new family and as you can tell in the title of this TR, one of us had a fabulous time getting up close and personal with the characters. :rotfl:

Trip Details
Dates: January 21-30, 2011
Resort: Pop Century
Tickets: 9 day Magic Your Way w/ Park Hopper Option
Dining Plan: We upgraded from the quick service plan that comes with free dining to the standard plan.

Cast:
Me, Jiminy_78, a lifelong Disneyholic. I grew up on the west coast and made my first trip to Disneyland when I was less than one year old. Several other trips to DL followed that throughout my childhood and youth. I first visited WDW in 1989 with my parents and sister, my next trip was with my youth choir in 1994. During this trip I spent a lot of time wandering MGM hoping to be “discovered” to join the new cast of the MMC. Of course, I now know that they weren’t even filming new episodes then, but I was obsessed. After that trip I didn’t return to WDW for 13 years! The horror! During that hiatus I did work for the Disney Store (before it was sold to Children’s Place and then bought back) and visited Disneyland twice. My favorite characters are Jiminy Cricket and Eeyore. I actually named one of my cats Eeyore when I was in high school but my parents decided it was too difficult to say all the time so we called him Mr. E. Well, everyone else thought we’d named our cat Mystery, go figure, it took more to explain his name than if we’d just called him Eeyore. But I digress… I work as a school psychologist and love to daydream about trips to WDW in my spare time.

DisneyPhotoImage75.JPG

DH, we’ll call him Mr. Bean, because well that’s his DIS name. Creative, huh? He first visited WDW in 1989 (a few months after I was there) with his brother and Grandma. He needed me to come along in his life to reignite his love for all things Disney. I took him to DL for the first time in 2003 and after our WDW trip in 2007 he’s been back at least once a year since. He went in 2008 with his siblings to celebrate his sister’s 21st birthday and I had to stay home because I’d just started a new job. I was so sad. He works as a software engineer and is very savvy with computers. He created our own website where we have counted down to trips and have links to all our dining reservations and restaurant menus. Between the two of us he’s the planner. He is amazing at crunching numbers and doing Disney math to get us the best deals on our vacations. His favorite character is Goofy! :goofy:

_MG_2077.JPG

And here’s the star of the show and light of our lives. (Doesn’t every parent say that?) Our DS, we’ll call him Nemo, was born in early August 2010. Shortly after he was born, I noticed that he had very small ears. Once I gave him a thorough look over I noticed that it was not both ears, just his right ear that was smaller. It appeared as though it hadn’t developed completely on the outside. That same day DH and I were talking about our perfect son and I said “we have our own Nemo, he has a lucky ear.” Shortly after we had this conversation my sister came to the hospital with a Finding Nemo Happy Birthday balloon and we took it as a sign that we’d been blessed with a very special boy. As much as DH and I were hoping for Nemo to love Jiminy or Eeyore or even Goofy, it turns out that he is a, wait for it….T-I-double G-ER fan. :tigger:

A little background for this trip: DH and I last visited WDW in late March 2010 when I was five months pregnant. We had APs that expired in early April and we wanted to squeeze in one more trip before Nemo arrived. We were there for 12 nights and pigged out on the DxDDP. You can read about our culinary journey in our Dining Review. When we were on the Magical Express heading back to MCO (I think they should rename this part of the journey the Tragical Express, because let’s be real there is nothing magical about facing reality again) I was full of conflicted emotions. Sad because we weren’t planning on returning to WDW until March 2012 when we were going to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. However, I was also really excited about the next phase of our lives and becoming parents.

Nemo arrived, life was wonderful, we bought a new house and moved in and everyday was a new adventure. We really weren’t planning to return to WDW but that didn’t stop me from going on line and planning out trips for fun. One day in late October, I was eating my lunch and looking at the free dining promotions for 2011 and I got out my day planner and realized that one of the free dining weeks in January coincided with a long weekend from work due to a furlough day. I priced out some different resorts and dining plan options and called DH at work. I felt like we were in one of those WDW commercials where you see the parents staring at a computer in the middle of the night going “hey, we could do that.” Except that we were both on our computers at work during our lunch breaks trying to see how quickly we could plan and book a WDW vacation. While he was double checking my numbers I started to look at airfare and found some decent flights. I then began searching the dining reservations to see what was available. There are a few restaurants that are “must do” for us and le Cellier is one of them. I joking told DH that if I could manage to find an ADR for le Cellier then we’d go. Well, I found one for lunch on the day we were flying home. We took it as a sign that we were meant to go and we booked the package and bought our airline tickets, all within sixty minutes. I think that was a new record for us in planning a trip! :rotfl2:

Once it was all booked we realized that we were going to have to tell people that we were going back to our happy place and we knew we’d get looks and sighs and the occasion “big surprise” and “we knew you couldn’t hold out that long” and the “How old will DS be when you go?” We then realized that we were about to set out on an adventure to a very familiar place but in new unfamiliar territory. We had to start thinking about Baby Centers, Baby Swaps, naptimes, diaper bags, baby food…. We had a little less than three months to figure it all out. Would we manage? :rolleyes1

This TR is about two parents who thought they knew it all and had seen it all and the beautiful little Nemo who proved them wrong. It may make you laugh, or cringe, or cry. I’m sure that some parents will shake their heads and say that a baby just shy of six months has no business being at WDW and to them I say “You’re probably right, but this was our lesson to learn and adventure to have.” We learned a lot, had a lot of fun, and as mentioned before, one of us got very friendly with members of the fab five. So without further ado…let’s get this TR on the road….

Our agenda:
Friday, 1/21 – arrive at MCO at 10:30pm, take ME to Pop Century
Saturday, 1/22 – Magic Kingdom (Breakfast ADR at Crystal Palace)

:welcome:
We did learn a lot this trip both about WDW with an infant and about ourselves as parents who thought we knew it all.

:welcome:

I just took a peak at your TR and it looks like you had a great time, can't wait to read more about it. I saw that you visited two of our favorites, California Grill and le Cellier. DH and I loved to go to dinner at CG before evening EMH at the MK... but alas that didn't happen this trip. ;) Maybe next time when we bring my mom along for support and to help watch Nemo!

As promised, here are some pictures from previous trips.

In 2007, we visited WDW the week of Thanksgiving with my sister and her husband. We stayed in a one bedroom suite at SSR and enjoyed the high life. DH and I embraced our inner child and bought each other new mouse ears with our names on the back. This was when the CMs still did the names by hand so they have some "character" to them.

IMG_3717.JPG

After our first journey to Mars on Mission Space, DH had to try on this hat to see if he could cut it as an astronaut. Remember this picture for future reference. ;)

IMG_3468.JPG

On our last day in the MK, DH and I were playing around with the camera and trying to take self portraits on and near Tom Sawyer’s island without getting in everyone’s way. This is easier said than done but this picture is still one of my favorites.

IMG_4018.JPG

In April 2009, we visited for ten nights leading up to Easter. We stayed at Pop Century the first two nights before switching to the Wilderness Lodge for the last eight nights. While Pop was fun and whimsical, we really enjoyed the WL. This picture was taken at AK during evening EMH. We were walking along and stumbled upon Mickey and Minnie with no one around besides two CMs and a Photopass photographer. They called us over and we took some great pictures. I believe that Minnie herself posed us for this picture. I have this on my shelf at work when I need a quick pick me up.

DH and I returned to WDW in September 09 for the Food and Wine Festival at Epcot and to attend MNSSHP. As soon as we booked this trip we began thinking about who we wanted to dress as. I had received a sewing machine from my mother and figured this was a good enough excuse as any to get it out of the box and put it to work. We spent months planning these costumes. And I spent hours sewing the vest, chaps, decorating shirts and drawing red stripes on a yellow shirt. Then there was the search for the right shoes, belt buckles, and hats. It was a long process right down to the sheriff badge that I picked up during a summer trip to DL. All the hard work was worth it though once we walked into the Golden Horseshoe and “Woody” got to meet Woody. It was funny because Bullseye started to follow us out of the hall after our pictures and Woody had to stomp his feet and call him back, he thought that DH was his new owner. A moment of pure Disney magic!

During our March 2010 trip I was five months pregnant. Spring break came earlier this year we were able to get one more trip out of our APs. We spent 12 nights at POFQ and I really enjoyed this beautiful quaint resort. The extra time allowed for a more relaxing vacation as I waddled my way around the world. While DH was riding the rides that were off limits for me, I went around and had all the characters that I could find sign an autograph book for baby Nemo. Once we were home I made a scrapbook of all the characters autographs and well wishes and put them next to pictures of us with the characters. DS loves to look at the colorful pictures and listen to stories about when he stowed away to WDW in Mommy’s tummy. Who am I kidding, he doesn’t understand a word I’m saying, but someday he will and I’m glad I have that treasure to share with him. :)

Here we are with Sulley and Mike (BTW, these guys don’t give autographs due to their, well, big hands and one eye). :sulley:

IMG_3978.JPG

You may notice that Goofy is touching my belly, this is funny because right before this picture was taken we had this “conversation” where Goofy was trying to ask me if DH was the father of the baby. I turned to him and said “No Goofy, you are, don’t you remember when we were here in September?” Well, he almost fell over onto the floor and Mickey started shaking his head and grabbing his stomach like he was laughing and Minnie turned to Mickey and started to rub her belly like she was pregnant. The whole exchange was so quick and yet we’ll never forget it. The CM was laughing and going “Oh Goofy, you’re in trouble” and Goofy tried to pretend that the autograph book was a Bible as he put one hand on it and held the other up as if he were being sworn in at court, he was telling the truth, it wasn’t his baby. Again, pure Disney magic, moments like this are why we’ll keep coming back to our happy place year after year. ::MickeyMo

IMG_3799.JPG

One of the rides I could go on was Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin. DH wins every time we ride and we always laugh because he has such a serious expression on his face when they take our picture. I have long since given up on actually beating him at this game and try to focus on making faces for the camera and spinning the car as soon as he’s focused in on a target. Again, remember this picture for later in the TR.

IMG_4060.JPG

I also have a disclaimer to make. This trip wasn’t my first trip to a Disney theme park with an infant. In July ’09 I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to DL with my mom, sister and nephew who was eight months old at the time. It was on this trip that I learned about rider swap for rides with height restrictions and discovered that my nephew could go on any ride without a height restriction. We have several memories from this trip but the icing on the cake was when we went to the Disney Visa meet and great one afternoon and had the chance to visit with Chip and Dale. My nephew had met them over breakfast at Goofy’s kitchen and they became fast friends. On this particular day there was no line and no one else was waiting to meet the characters it was like it was our own secret magical moment. Dale sat down and took my nephew into his lap and the rest is beyond words.

Coming up: Are We There Yet?

Subbing! Sounds like you've both had such wonderful times with Disney and this TR will be one to read! Your little Nemo is such a cutie. The last two pics of your nephew were beautiful. What a special moment!

Loved the story with Goofy being the baby's father. What a silly memory to share with him as he gets older, too. Can't wait to follow along and see how this adventure goes! :goodvibes

:welcome:

I'm in and all ready to read about your first trip with cutie pie.

Great pictures and memories. Love that last two with your DN.

Welcome Lucky Lady! Thanks for joining in on the excitement! Glad you've enjoyed the pictures thus far. :)

Welcome jc040404! Yes, it was a very humorous exchange with Goofy, and since he's DH's favorite character it made it that much more special.

The pictures with DN and Chip and Dale are priceless. We never expected them to get down on the floor with him and snuggle. At one point he actually fell asleep for a second in Dale's arms. Talk about a magical nap! DN is over two years old now and he still talks about his friends Chip and Dale. :goodvibes

Loving all the memories! :thumbsup2 Them costumes for MNSSHP are great as are the chip and dale interaction pics with your nephew :wizard:

Sorry for the delay in getting this report started, I wrote the introduction and then realized that I had misplaced my notepad with all my notes. Finally found a few spare minutes to search around and I found it so let the trip report begin! :thumbsup2

Day One: Friday

“I heart Southwest…except when they delay my journey to the magic”

The day we had been waiting for was finally here! I managed to get out of work a little early so that I could run a few last minute errands and double check all the suitcases before picking up Nemo at daycare. We live pretty close to the airport so we figured we would just take a cab. However, once we were all packed and realized that we had four suitcases, two carry-ons, a stroller, and car seat we started to panic that all of our stuff wouldn’t fit in a cab. So we put our heads together and came up with a plan b that included DH dropping Nemo and myself off at the airport with some of our bags while he went home and waited for the cab. Let me just say that those felt like the longest 20 minutes of my life sitting and waiting for DH to get back.

IMG_5350.JPG

Once DH was back with us and all our bags we made our way to the Southwest counter. Let me just say I love flying SW. Two free bags are a live saver when traveling with an infant. The girl at the counter was super sweet and patient. She weighed my biggest bag first and it was three pounds over so we did the shuffleroo and made it so all the bags were underweight. This wasn’t Nemo’s first flight; we’d traveled to the west coast for the holidays and had flown out of a different airport since we were traveling with my sister’s family. We had been scrutinized at security and I had a security guard all but drink Nemo’s milk to determine that it was in fact what I said it was. So I was all ready this time and explained to the security agent what I had and I was all ready to take everything out but she just looked at me and smiled as if to say “whatever” and let us through. That was a lot easier than I’d anticipated and yet a little scary also. :confused3Once we’d made it through security all the pre-travel stress melted away and I started to get really excited…we’re going back to Disney World!!!

I found a family bathroom and got Nemo changed into is pajamas since our flight was taking off at his bedtime I had whimsical fantasies of him sleeping the whole way down. Once he was changed we were ready to find some dinner. It was on our way to the gate and we realized that our flight had been delayed until 9:05. We found some chairs to claim and I sent DH to find his dinner. He came back and then I went to get a sandwich at AuBon and a diet coke at the newsstand. The sandwich was yummy and after we were done eating they announced that our flight was delayed again until 9:35, well after Nemo’s bedtime. We passed the time by walking around the terminal, checking in with some friends and family over the phone, charging the phone so I could play Angry Birds on the flight, and playing with Nemo.

2011-01-21%2020.04.05.jpg

Once our plane arrived and we were getting ready to board one of the attendants came over to ask me if I had purchased a seat for Nemo. When I told him that I hadn’t he told me to check with the counter because he thought that there were seats available still. I went and talked to the ticket agent and she confirmed that Nemo could in fact have his own seat (no charge) and she gave me a claim check for his stroller so we could leave it at the gate. Have I mentioned how much I love Southwest? If only our flight had been on time, but our past two times flying to Orlando at night our flights were delayed. We boarded the plane, found our own row and Nemo fell asleep shortly after takeoff. We arrived in Orlando and went to claim our bags. We weren’t sure how to balance all the suitcases so we picked up a luggage cart that helped us get everything to the Magic Express. I love that moment when we load the bus and pick out which red seat covered in stars we want to sit in as we travel to our happy place! Nemo was all snuggled in his car seat and still asleep when we loaded but as we sat and waited he started to fuss. Luckily he calmed back down once the bus started to move and he was out until we got to Pop Century.

Room requests can be hit or miss and DH had made some pretty specific requests. We stood in a relatively long line to check in and found out that they had not met any of our requests. We wanted to be on the first floor near the main building and we were placed on the fourth floor in the 80’s. We knew this wasn’t going to work for us with the stroller and asked about a room change. They were all booked for that night but the CM put in a room change request for us and told us that they’d call us in the morning if they could accommodate our request. At this point it was after 1am and we just wanted to get some sleep. We set off to trek over to the furthest 80’s building and along the way DH figured out how to wheel all four suitcases at the same time, guess we didn’t need that luggage cart at the airport after all. I’d already promised DH that I wouldn’t unpack everything right away like I usually do; and since we were hoping to change rooms we just unpacked the bare minimum of what we’d need for the night. A few minutes after getting to our room mousekeeping delivered our fridge but didn’t have the pack n play, she sounded confused when I asked her for it even though the CM at the desk had told they would bring the two items together. We decided that since it was close to 2am and we had a date with Pooh and friends in seven hours that we’d just call it a night and Nemo would sleep with me on one of the double beds. He slept fine, me not so much, but hey, we made it to Disney World! :yay:

Am glad you managed to find a solution to get all the bags to the airport :thumbsup2

Yay on Nemo getting his own seat on the plane and sleeping through most of the journey. I hope you get your requested room the next day as well as the pack'n'play :)

Subbing! One day we might be you guys... Bringing an infant to wdw :)

Our alarm went off around at 7am and we were up after only five and a half hours sleep. It’s always amazing how fatigue just seems to melt away when you’re starting a Disney vacation, adrenaline kicks in and you’re good to go. :yay:
_MG_1679.JPG

I got up and got showered and got Nemo fed and dressed. Just as DH was about to jump in the shower we realized that we had a message from the front desk, we called them back and learned that they would be able to switch our room! They told us to pack everything up and leave it in the room and that they would move it for us. :woohoo:We got ready and tried to think of everything that Nemo would need for a morning in the park. We were out the door and at the bus stop to MK by 8:30am.

We hopped on the bus and realized that there wasn’t room for us to sit so we decided to stand because we didn’t want to miss our ADR time. I was a little surprised that no one offered a seat to either of us since we were holding an infant but I didn’t expect it since it had been our decision to take that bus. We could have easily waited for the next bus if we needed to sit. It was Nemo’s first bus ride, period, and he was taking it all in. He loves to people watch and will just stare at people if he wants to. I can see that we’re going to have to have a conversation someday when he’s able to understand about why we don’t stare at people, but at six months what are you going to do?

We made it to the Magic Kingdom and went to the right because this was the way that we had been directed on previous trips when we had an ADR before the park opened. It wasn’t until we were through the gate that we realized that the entrance for ADRs was on the left now. :sad2:There were too many people for us to cross since everyone was waiting for the opening show. We asked about leaving and going through the gate on the other side and the CM told us that we’d be stuck and that we should just enjoy the show and not worry about it. So we gave up on trying seeing Main Street empty this trip and just focused on Nemo and seeing if he was excited at all. Here is where I should explain that he is a very serious baby… so while we were all excited he just looked at us as if to say “you woke me up early for this?” Classic Nemo. I wasn’t sure what I had expected, that he’d see Mickey’s face made of flowers and get all excited but that’s just not his personality. So we waited and enjoyed the opening show before entering Main Street with everyone else.

_MG_1684.JPG

DH ran ahead and went to get FP for Space Mountain while we went and checked in at Crystal Palace. Funny side story, the first time we ate at CP, we waited forever to hear our name called and it never happened. We heard them calling a name that sounded like ours but when we checked it was clear that it wasn’t our name. We waited and waited and finally asked them what happened to our ADR. It turns out that the couple with a name that sounded like ours had gone in when they’d called our name. It took the staff a while to figure that out and we’d lost a good half hour of park time on our last day there so I was a little bummed. Every time that we had visited CP since that trip we’ve made sure to stand closer and listen carefully. ;) I was impressed this time that they had a pager for us so we didn’t have to rely on someone pronouncing our name correctly. :rotfl: We hadn't waited long before our pager went off and we were escorted inside to a nice table by the back window.
_MG_1709.JPG

We got to talking to a family at the next table that had a son who was about four months older than Nemo. They were on the last day of their vacation and were going to be driving back to PA that afternoon. I couldn’t help but feel excited that we were just starting our adventure.:goodvibes DH went to get some fresh omelets for us while I got Nemo settled and fed him some cereal.

_MG_1687.JPG

Soon our friends started to show up and Nemo met his first characters. First up was Piglet! Nemo was kind of like “Who is this big pig made of pink?” but he didn’t cry.
_MG_1688.JPG

Eeyore visited us next. Now, as previously mentioned, Eeyore is one of my favorites. We go way back and I was so excited to introduce him to my son. I’d even made a special onesie for Nemo to wear to breakfast that had Eeyore on it. Eeyore seemed to like the shirt and Nemo enjoyed petting Eeyore. In my book we call that a success.
_MG_1692.JPG

_MG_1695.JPG

We had a little break here so we ate our omelets and ran back for more delicious goodness before the rest of the characters came around. I grabbed Nemo a banana off the buffet and mashed some up for him; he seemed to enjoy his first taste of fresh banana.

Our next visitor was the man himself, Pooh. Nemo wasn’t too impressed but we all jumped together for a family photo. I must say, Pooh’s eyes look kind of angry, bored, I don’t know, can’t quite put my finger on it, but he doesn’t seem too happy. What do you guys think?
_MG_1702.JPG

Our last visitor was Tigger. I don’t know if it was the bright colors, the bold stripes, or the fact that he kept bouncing around our table but Nemo thought he was the coolest of the them all and he managed a smile for Tigger. (Of course it wasn’t caught on camera…)
_MG_1707.JPG

After we’d met all the characters, watched them dance around the room waving napkins, and Nemo managed to spill coffee all over the table and DH, we decided it was time to head out. :scared1: We sent DH to scope out wait times while we headed off the Baby Center. I changed Nemo’s diaper and took him into the nursing room which was just a room with lots of old rocking chairs in it and a few tables with lamps. Not the most comfortable setting but it was quiet and private so we made it work. Once Nemo was full and clean and happy we met up with DH outside and faced the big decision…what ride do we take Nemo on first? I know it sounds silly but we hadn’t talked about this and yet it suddenly felt like such a huge decision. As if what we decided would make or break his vacation and forever alter his perception of Disney World. Well, what do you expect? We’re sleep deprived parents of a not quite six month old. We’re not always rational or logical.

What ride do you think we went on…?

Hmmm.. Tough one.. Dumbo seems to be the most popular first ride, so I'll stick with that. It is a bit of a wait with a little guy, but I think Nemo looks like he handles waits okay. :confused3 I can't wait to find out!

LOVE the Eeyore shirt! We're big Eeyore fans here, too. Pooh looks kinda bored and tired to me. I don't usually think of him that way though. Is it how his head is tilted? Too weird.

Love the Tigger pic, even if you didn't catch Nemo's smile. What a wonderful breakfast!

Subscribing...Loving the report so far! You're son is so adorable!!

:welcome: MouskeMom09 to both the DIS and my TR!

Dumbo is an excellent guess. Hopefully I'll get an update done soon so you won't be in suspense for too long! I think you're right, Pooh's head is tilted forward a little, maybe that is what caused "the look". I still love him though. Maybe he'd just had a late night at the Rose and Crown the night before? :rotfl:

Your son is SO cute. Likeing your TR so far. Oh, and the picture of Chip or Dale holding your nephew is ummm .....priceless. Love it. :lovestruc

Love your TP so far!!! Can't wait to for more. Maybe Pooh's eyes could be a little bigger like Tigger's? I have to agree he does look weird.
BTW- the Chip and Dale pic with your nephew is just too cute!!
