Pulling Kids out Based on The Grade They're In

My son will be 12. He is in 7th grade. He wants to go to the Air Force Academy. This made me hit the realization I have 6 years of "family" time!

Only 6 years and the possibility of never vacationing with my entire family -- a week of school doesn't seem too significant.

And maybe you could use the trip as encouragement for improving reading by reading trip books and story books

My daughter is in First grade and at my parent-teacher conference, I let her teacher know that we were taking a week to go to Disney in Dec and she was very good about it. She had absolutely no problem with her missing the 5 days of school and even said "She is a kid and this is the time to enjoy it". There is no homework to take with us and we just have to do a journal each day to practice her writing skills. Even suggested a photo journal. I was so happy that she was okay with it!!

We have taken out of K and 2nd. I wasn't going to do it again after 2nd grade, but I'm planning next year taking them out of 2nd and 4th! I was shooting for Saturday before Thanksgiving 2008 through day after Thanksgiving so they would only miss 2.5 days instead of a week. Also, I would get holiday pay for Thanksgiving for 2 days so that would help a little (neither DH or I get vacation pay). Our little school has never had a problem with it. High school I probably wouldn't, I just remember hating to miss even a sick day then.

But I just wonder if crowd wise and airfare wise if it would be better to go ahead and take them out a whole week at some other time instead...I can't decide!
