Hi all. I'll be in Hawaii for a week after my DLR trip in January, and during my stay, it is Martin Luther King Day. Can you tell me whether anything is open on a public holiday in Hawaii, like shops/restaurants etc? And do you think tour groups would be running tours that day? TIA.

I don't know about Hawaii. In the continental US, King's birthday means that federal buildings and banks are closed as are most of the schools, but shops and restaurants are almost all open.

I can't speak for Hawai'i, but my guess is that it will be pretty much the same as here: banks, schools, post office, and other government buildings will be closed, but stores and restaurants will almost certainly be open.

don't know specifically about Hawaii - but typically on federal holidays retail/restaurant/tourist places are open business as usual. Federal offices and post offices, banks, and many state government offices will all be closed.

Thanks guys. Looks like whatever we plan should be do-able! After a week at DLR though, I'll be happy to lay on a pool chair and do NOTHING!

Yeah, it's pretty much a "gov't" holiday. Lot's of companies are still open (like mine). You should find plenty to do.
