My poor DD was just not meant to go to Disney. We were due to go Nov 2015 and had to cancel as her vasculitus returned and the doctor told her she could not travel. We re-booked Disney for this November which had turned into her honeymoon,(they getting married at the end of October)
DD found out she is pregnant 2 weeks ago, and has been advised not to go, so once again they have had to cancel. They will get a full refund from Disney so can re book their honeymoon, but England in November (they don't want to travel abroad now just in case) but looks like they have lost their flight and universal ticket monies

I think it's easy to say cancel and not take the risk if you haven't spent the hard earned money, countless hours planning and getting excited about the trip. Me and my wife are heading on a Disney Cruise followed by two weeks at Disney World for our Honeymoon at the end of this month and there is no way we would consider cancelling. I'm saying this from the perspective of not planning on having kids soon but certainly in the future so I understand the warnings for those who are pregnant or planning but there is a lot more that goes into a Disney holiday than your two weeks in the Med type holiday.

This is a situation where a one size fits all process does not work, i'll be going on my trip and enjoying every minute and make sure I get an appointment with my doc once back in the country! I for one am bored of the scaremongering the press puts out every day of the week anyways!

In your case I would say just go as well, because the chances that you will get infected, then have an unplanned pregnancy in the next few months after, and have it affect the baby are so small.

I also would have no problem going. I can't get pregnant anyway so really no risk at all for me.

However for those that are actually pregnant I can't imagine ignoring the warnings and going. I have been bitten by mosquitos every time I have been to disney. No that wasn't while using bug spray but I have been bitten plenty of times when I have while camping etc as well so I just couldn't risk it.

For those just planning well then it would be a decision of if postponing having a baby for a few months or postponing the trip was a better option for them.

Hi - Firstly and most importantly CONGRATULATIONS to them and you .

Have they contacted the carrier or do they have insurance or paid by credit card. Most carriers have been allowing refunds or credit slips. What about Disney Paris they could travel by train so no flights involved. Failing that I can recommended a cottage at a center parcs at lest they would be guaranteed some warmer "outdoor(ish) space and pools". And they would have a nice real fire to sit round at night and a few easy walkable restaurants.

did she speak with the airline? they might refund or credit her for a future flight...
my mom is on delta and had to cancel one of these super cheap tickets with no refunds - it was due to my sister's ovarian worsening..
anyway....delta was super nice about it...

so i would check with the airline...after all, the UK health authorities have issued a warning to pregnant women not to go to florida, so there's a clear health emergency reason for cancelling...

Hi, yes we talked to BA but as we booked through Travel Up who purchase tickets, we have to go through that company,we explained to Travel Up why they have had to cancel the flights which cost them £455 each and they offered £21 refund . I have talked with my Debit card company and they are looking to see if they can refund the money, so fingers crossed

2015 was a nightmare. We went to Mexico for a holiday and both my husband and myself were bitten to death by mosquitos in the first few days, despite precautions. Upon our return to the UK my husband started displaying symptoms, which gradually got worse over 2 weeks. I am a Ward Manager on an acute stroke unit and thought hubby had had a stroke - tests negative. He continued to deteriorate and was unable to mobilise due to loss of sensation in both legs, which then spread to his hands. His BP, Pulse and Temperature were all deranged and eventually had to be admitted to hospital.

Blood tests were done and my hubby had to be moved to a more acute hospital as neurologically he was deteriorating. Eventually he was diagnosed with Guillain-barre syndrome, which can be fatal as it causes your body to attack itself. His kidney, liver and heart function were all deteriorating. Luckily he was given IV medication to counteract the guillain-barre and after a while he started to get better.

We are now a year further forward and he has made a full recovery, but it could have been so much worse if we hadn't acted promptly.

The blood tests done at the 1st hospital weren't sent across to the 2nd, so they did not know that it showed a positive test for yellow fever. He was not tested specifically for Zika, as there wasn't a test here in the UK at that time. There is no connection between Yellow Fever and Guillain-barre, but there is with Zika. His consultant now believes he was infected with Zika, possibly as well or instead of Yellow Fever.

I did not have any symptoms, but at 45 I'm not planning on extending my family, and you would not necessarily get any symptoms, so I too could have been infected without knowing.

I have to say, we've never been bitten by a mosquito whilst going anywhere in the US, and we've been a fair number of times.

I can fully understand the worry and has completely put us off going anywhere south of the states, especially Mexico! I could now have been sat here a widow, but I'm not and we'd never be put off going to WDW.

glad to hear he made a complete recovery...
i had GBS back in 2009, a result of the 2009 swine flu vaccine (i wasn't alone, many people got GBS that year from the swine flu vaccine)
i also made a complete recovery!!

Florida is a big state..... Orlando is a very different to Miami where they have had the problem. These problems tend to happen in the poorer areas.... Just like every year in California the Nile Virus is a problem.

Obviously keep an eye on things.... We are just back from WDW and this news story is over a week old. No new outbreaks have been indentified since the story first broke.

I have zero concerns about visiting Disney

Exactly . I live two hours north of the FL. state line. Savannah GA. has all the same problems as FL. If you are worried wear insect repellent. It is not a big deal.

i'm amazed it took them that long to diagnose guillain-barre....his symptoms of upward moving paralysis are classic...
glad to hear he made a complete recovery...

I got it's big brother Transverse Myelitis and I am sure it was the H1N1 flu vaccine too (several others got this after that flu vaccine and its so rare that even a handful getting it was an unusual spike). I was very lucky as it was in 2 places 1 at C3/C4 the other T7 but only the T7 caused permanent damage - I have lost the proper use of my right leg (now on crutches/wheelchair) - But if the C3/4 had been permanent I would have been left paralyzed from the neck down and on a ventilator. I had to have a chemo type drug daily for 5 years to try and prevent any more attacks (shot in the dark as so rare there is no formal approved treatment)

oh i'm so sorry! that's horrible...but i guess it's good to look at the bright side that it could have been much worse...but still to have that terrible permanent damage!!!
