We are condidering purchasing one of these. My DS9 has saved up enough to purchase the DS but I have been thinking of helping him out to get the PSP. I know the PSP has more features (watching movies and music options)and that the DS has more games that can be played.

What are Dis'ers reviews on these products?

Nintendo DS would be my vote. We LOVE Mario games in our house, so I can't imagine having any system that we couldn't play Mario games on. The movies feature is neat with the PSP--but I can't imagine buying or even renting a movie just so I could watch on such a tiny screen while I held it--when you could watch it on DVD on your TV Screen or on your portable DVD Player. I can't imagine any child really using it to watch movies much. DS games are cheaper also.

DS likes to play his friend's Nintendo DS.

Not sure about a PSP.

If you think your DS would watch the movies, listen to the music, etc. then I would consider it. :)

Actually, I've been thinking about having my son sell his PSP. He got it for Christmas last year and hardly ever plays with it. On the other hand, he uses his DS all the time (well, he did until I washed it!). Same goes for my DD. She never uses her PSP but does use her DS. Maybe it's just them but they definitely prefer the DS.

DS. (we really like the DS lite - my old eyes can see the screen)The touch screen is cool.

Luckily when we turned in the PSP - it still had a good resale value.

I'd say the DS. I have both and would recommend the PSP for adults and DS for kids. I love my PSP for watching my shows off of the TiVo on the go. But I tend to play more games on the DS.

On my kids' swim team there is a whole group of kids who hang out together playing their DSs between events. They can play games together wirelessly. The one kid with a PSP is out of luck. (DS15 offered to sell him his DS cheap so that he could earn some money to buy a DS Lite, but the kid declined.)

He just got a Ipod for his b-day, so the music feature of the PSP may not be a big factor for him. As far a movies go I am not sure if he would watch any on the PSP. Can you rent movies for the PSP at a movie store or do you have to purchase them?

The one factor that I like is the picture on the PSP is excellent.

I have both a PSP and a DS. I use the DS more because I love the games a lot more.

I don't have any experience with the PSP, but my son does have the Nintendo DS, which he loves. What I love about it is their service department. They have the best repair/exchange customer service that I have ever, ever experienced.

My son cracked the top screen of the DS and had to shell out $50 to have it repaired, and it wasn't still under warranty. He was nervous because he was leaving on a class trip in three weeks and didn't think he'd have it back in time for the 6 hour bus trip. However, the entire process of shipping it and getting it back took less than a week (and we didn't ask them to expedite). They replaced the screen, ran diagnostics and said if they found anything else wrong with it, they would fix that as well (all included in the $50). The customer service reps were very pleasant to deal with too.

It sounds like the DS, which costs less is the popular vote here. I did notice they do have a better selection of games and that seems more important to the kids than the extra features of the PSP.

PSP is way better than DS. My DS10 has both and the PSP rocks. :thumbsup2

DS DS DS DS DS DS

Most of the PSP games are a complete waste of time. The DS is way better especially for a 9-year-old!

The DS has much better support, and is largely viewed as the supperior handheld gaming device by reviewers.

We have both and my son (12 years) plays the DS way more. :)

young kids are mostly not interested in the psp. They just don't play with it. I think its for older guys mostly 20-30ishs. Get him the DS.

Thanks for all of your help, I have been convinced to get the DS. :thumbsup2

As a 26 year old man I say the........DS!!!!

The PSP is a waste of time, space, money and pretty much everything else I can think of.

THE DS has far more games(which are far superior) The PSP's games are rehashes of PS2 games and look great graphically but play poorly.
Not to mention DS games have NO load time...no waiting to play. PSP games take on average about 10 minutes to load between every screen((It's a slight exageration, but honestly it takes a few minutes to laod all the time...go to a local gamestop and ask to try it you'll see.))

THE PSP MP3 music feature is worthless. it's way to bulk to carry around just to listen to music on.

To watch TVIO shows and or video's you have to get special compression sofware to make much of it work.((MORE $$$$)))

Th Save PSP game syou need to buy a SONY MEmory stick DUO((Which cost WAY to much))

And the PSP battery life runs out pretty much at the end of a movie and they you have to recharge.

The DS on the other hand had none of these problema dn the battery life is way longer!

I already mentioned the games..and the DS LITE's screens are just a nice as those on the psp.

Only DS downside...is you get the LITE it's only in WHITE...this can get dirty fast!

BUT DS ALL THE WAY!!! LONG LIVE MARIO!!!!

I frequent many video game message boards, btw I am 16. Nintendo is the king of handhelds, not really much debate. The PSP will break easily, and if in the rare occasion a Nintendo product does break, they will replace it.

Games are as a whole much better than PSP. The movie feature or UMD has flopped as many movie marketers are jumping ship from the format. Sony is now doing something with memory cards and very lackluster at that. You have to buy memory cards to save the music you play and the games.

The DS is getting a web browser soon, and already has an extra attachment to play movies and music if you want to (expensive though). I see many people trading in the PSP as they only listened to the music and movies on it, so there is not much point.

Great games for the DS are New Mario, Wario Ware Touched, Meteos (puzzle) Mario Kart, Metroid, Brain Age Games, for youngins Nintendogs. Advance Wars is another great game. And how could I forget Animal Crossing.

Someone loaded Mario Kart and this racing game for the PSP. They had finished 3 laps and started another one before the PSP could get ten seconds into the race. Awful loading times.

Thx for the answers. You people have helped a lot. :thumbsup2
