First let me say, DH and I have moved a LOT in the past 25 years. Owned 5 different homes, rented at various times, etc. due to the military and my job. So it is sometimes hard to track us down.

BUT...I encourage everyone to check your current and former states' official unclaimed property sites assuming your treasury dept has one. I randomly checked today and we had over $300 due to us from 10-20 years ago! My deceased MIL and FIL also had $.

My windfall paid for my groceries today...barely... :P

About 10 years ago I checked Pennsylvania’s unclaimed assets website. I have an small insurance policy my parents bought for me when I was an infant. (Probably because my uncle was an insurance salesman.). Anyway, it was worth about $4000.

But my childhood street name is misspelled and I have no satisfactory proof that I ever lived there.

Before direct deposit, I once forgot about a paycheck. A different uncle noticed my name in the newspaper notices about unclaimed funds and informed me. I was able to recover that amount.

We've secured funds from Il's unclaimed several times, a few hundred $$. For one of Marie's uncles whom has dementia, I retrieved a bit over $4,000 once and a bit over $400 once.

I just looked. I am owed $3.82. What I don't understand, it shows my name, my address and the company that turned the money over to the state on my behalf. Why didn't they just mail me a check? The company, not the state. It is a supplier that I bought fixtures from during my remodel in 2013-14. I have been at this address for 39 years.

I have checked mine and also my parent's several times over the years and never found anything. However, when I checked after reading this thread my brother's name popped up three times. One said "over $100" and I let him know, so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the reminder. The state my parents and brother live/lived in pops up everyone with the same last name. So many are for amounts like $0.07. Why bother?

My moms name is in there several times. She is deceased. Not sure how to go about claiming that money.

My husband got a little over $300 several years ago.

I checked not too long ago and there wasn't anything. I just checked and found that Staples owe me $4.79. This is likely technically for my former (now closed) employer.

I received a couple hundred dollars from some canceled newspaper subscriptions that never got refunded when we moved and a rebate that didn't ever make it to the house. I do recommend everybody checking though.

To the poster who had the insurance policy, if you can figure out who the insurance provider is, you might still be able to reclaim that fund. They usually are willing to work with you. Children policies are fairly easy. All you have to be able to do is match the social security number to the policy. My husband and I are both insurance agents and even with unclaimed funds you should still be able to match it even without proof of address.

I check periodically.

Neither my husband nor I have any but my sister does, no idea if she knows though (our state doesn't display the amount either when just searching).

If you are the sole heir to your mom, you should be able to claim it with a copy of the death certificate and the will.

I checked once and my late grandma was listed. My dad called and he would have had to get paperwork signed by his 2 brothers, plus himself, to claim it. It was less than $100 so he decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

They print the list every year in out local paper, now online. I always look, but am never on the list. LOL

There are 4 of us. My brother was in charge.

A friend checked NJ’s site and received a $10,000 windfall from her mother’s estate somehow, some stock money plus interest. Her Mom had passed 20 years ago and at the time was in a nursing home with no known assets. It took my friend months to go through all the required steps, since there were marriages, divorces and name changes, but it happened! My friend was encouraged to look by a friend of hers who also found some money.
