Help! I am thinking of getting a PS3 for my BF for xmas this year. I bought him the Wii 2 years ago which he loves but I thought the PS3 had better games for it! That was until he piped up and said he wasn't sure how good the games were for it?! Does anyone have any reviews / experiences of the PS3??? Any recommendations, I have considered the Xbox as well if that is better. Needless to say I don't know a lot about these things! Any help appreciated! Thanx :thumbsup2

I've got a PS3 and it is fantastic. Played a Wii, and I think the big difference is that the Wii is a system for playing with a group, graphics are pants compared to the PS3, but a lot of the games are more playable - that having been said, we've got Guitar Hero for the PS3 and it's as good as the Wii's version.

Also, the PS3 is a Blu Ray player, and damn those films are good!

For me it's PS3 all the way.

Now bear with me as I am a girl and I don't play our PS3 personally. However the graphics are fantastic and beat hands down the WII.
We also view our photos on the TV via our PS and this is a really good feature when we have family round who all want to see pics of the kids.
Recently we had a big problem with it following an on line upgrade. DH called Sony and they sent us a re conditioned one in return (all in a new case with a new system inside) and it has been fine ever since. Apparantly it is quite common but it was sorted.

Just to avoid any worry, it was only a common problem for THAT particular update - there've been no reports of major problems before or since :)

I got one for xmas last year and love it - i guess it depends what kind of games you're into, but i play mine a lot, whereas my Wii sits mainly unused.

Also it's great as a media centre, and i put a lot of films that i've downloaded onto a USB stick into the ps3 to view through the telly.

Also it's has a wifi card built in and free online, which is something you'd have to shell out for if you went for an Xbox instead :)

Thanks guys, I'm totally clueless with these sort of things *** I don't play them myself! So its really good to get some honest opinions from people who have used them! I was leaning more towards the PS3 from things some other people had said to me, so will have to go on the hunt for one now!!!

My DS had his last Xmas and is never off it. He loves playing on-line and it's a good cheap way of communicating with his friends as they can message one another or speak via their headsets. :thumbsup2

We have just ordered ours from Dixons online - if you use the code PS3NEW at the checkout, you get a £10 discount bringing the price down to just over £270 for the 80GB HDD version - most other places it's almost £300.

Just be aware that any of the newer ps3's, the 40gb and 80gb won't play old ps2 games if he has any of those and still plays (I have the original 60gb which does play ps2 games - tho i've never really bothered).

What kind of games does he like to play at the moment, maybe i can have a go at recommending some.

Oh and three words for this xmas' must have game - Little Big Planet! I was lucky enough to have a code to download the beta version (which is used by games testers to give their early opinions on the game) and must say it's so so good. Apparently the UK release of it has been pushed back by a month due to some kind of muslim group kicking up a fuss about a song in it, but the US version is still out on the 27th October, which is when we're at WDW - leading to another good thing about the ps3 - unlike Wii (and Xbox I think) - it is region free for games, meaning you can buy games from America and they'll work :) (however most blu ray films will not, much like current dvd's).

Also do you have a HDTV? When i got my ps3 i had an old old telly, but 2 weeks later i went out and bought a HDTV and the difference is really noticable, not that it's bad on old tellys, just that it's wonderful on a HDTV :)

Hi, at the mo he tends to play the old Mario and Zelda games etc etc on the Wii. Did have a look at some games - thought maybe the FIFA 09 might be a safe choice! Think PS3 does sound a better all round console though. At the mo our tv isn't high def, but wil hopefully be getting one after xmas in the sales, lol!

Thanks a lot 4 ur help, any recommendations for games would be very welcome :thumbsup2

Deffo get one, me and my boyf have one (well its mainly he's cause i can't get on it when he's home) and its fantastic the graphics are brilliant, better than i ever imagined esp on a HD tv with a HDMI cable.

What type of games is he into?
Pro evo is a brilliant football game (one of my boyf fave's to play)
Burnout paradise is another one of our favourites (racing)
The graphics on Call of duty 4 and Uncharted and some of the best I have seen :)

I'm a big fan of Resistance:Fall of Man - probably better played online than the game itself. Also got Motorstorm which is a good racing game, did have Burnout Paradise but didn't think much of it - Gran Turismo 5 looks really cool too. Tiger Woods is superb, especially being able to load your own face on to the player:thumbsup2

Oh, and we've got Guitar Hero 3 which is cool!

Meh, not any more it's not, IMO, it stopped "evolving" with the 2008 version, and now as much as it pains me to say it, FIFA is now the must have football game.

I'm a big fan of Resistance:Fall of Man - probably better played online than the game itself.

Loved this too, got it with the ps3, and despite not really playing many shooters like this, really got into it and will be buying the sequel!!

Uncharted

Oh yes, Uncharted is a brilliant, brilliant game, if maybe a little short, but it's now only around £15 so wouldn't hesitate in getting it.

Also if he likes things like Mario, then as I said before look out for Little Big Planet, it will be immense!!
