OK so I admit I'm slightly depressed :rotfl2:

so doctor gives me the cheap prescription of Prozac as a first med.

what side effects did you have?

Sorry...I gained 40 lbs in such a short period of time and it didn't come off very quickly.. :( (Which of course made me MORE depressed!) I did better with Welbutrin. Not on anything now as I took it during a tough time in my life. Good luck to you!

nb. The generic name for Prozac is Fluoxetine.

From seratis.net:

This drug started out life as an antihistamine, diphenhydramine, which was found to inhibit the reuptake of the monoamine neurotransmitter serotonin. Fluoxetine is fairly stimulating, yet is an approved treatment for anxiety related conditions; even more converse is the fact that anxiety is one of the most (if not the most) frequent side effect of fluoxetine therapy. The drug also possesses a remarkably long half life which has proven useful in the treatment of more reluctant patients; should they suddenly stop taking the drug, the antidepressant effect will remain for a fair amount of time, hopefully long enough for the cessation to be noticed and rectified. Currently fluoxetine is available for use in children as young as eight, should psychotherapies fail.

Fluoxetine fast became an infamous drug under the brand name of Prozac; millions were prescribed the drug, largely due to an extremely effective and extensive advertising campaign. Unfortunately, the medication became controversial towards the end of the century due to an increased risk of suicidal behaviour amongst patients treated with the drug.

The most common side effects are anxiety, headaches, nervousness, insomnia, fatigue, tremor, dizziness, dry mouth, weight loss (possibly leading to anorexia), excessive sweating, nausea and diarrhea; fluoxetine also causes mania in approximately 6% of patients. Maximum therapeutic effect usually manifests after a period of a month to a month and a half.

From personal experience:

Fluoxetine was the first psychiatric medication I took in the treatment of my current illnesses and after just one dose I felt extremely energised, confident and euphoric. Unfortnately, a few days later I started to experience some unwanted side effects. My muscles became stiff and sore; I suffered minor bouts of amnesia and my psychotic symptoms worsened. After a couple of days, I was moved onto sertraline, which I tolerated far better.

I can't imagine life with out my Happy Pill. Five years of no blues and less panic is worth any side effects. Though I did not actually have any.
Good Luck

Hi!

Good for you for dealing with your depression first of all :thumbsup2

May I reccomend not asking everyone on here about side effects and just reading the pamphlet that came with your perscription as well as talking to your doc. I just read this thread and it would terify me enough to convince myself I was having one of these side effects wether or not I was or wasn't (no offense to anyone else who posted, I think the Dis is awesome mostly becuase everyone is so honest and forthwrite (Sp?) even when it's not what someone wants to hear. :disrocks:

Side effects are SO individual. I've been on Fluoxitine for YEARS and all it has ever done was "even me out" and return all my imbalanced chemicals to normal so I can cope like everyone else. It's been a saving grace and wonderful. I did not gain wait, get insomnia or anything else. Hopefully i'tll be the same way for you! If not, keep trying because you WILL find something that is right for you! Goodluck!

Prozac was so strong when I took it after my second child. It made me feel like a zombie. No emotions what so ever. Everybody is different. The doctor switched me to Wellbutrin, and it was great. If also has less sexual side effects. ;) It was just a better effect all .

Good luck.

:)

Prozac made me crazy. I couldn't sleep, mind kept racing, gained a lot of weight, no interest in sex AT ALL...EVER.

Switched first to Serzone then went to Wellbutrin and am now on Wellbutrin XL. Honestly I think I'd ask your doc for a "newer" med than Prozac like Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Celexa....but then my experience with prozac is probably clouding my judgement!
