Provincial plans for loosening restrictions

Interesting. Is it mostly fear in your opinion? Or parents just don't see the point, with the school year being so close to an end anyway?
I'd say probably both? For us it was mostly "what's the point?". My youngest would go twice a week and flatly said to me "nope I want to stay home" and her sister, who would go once a week, shrugged and said "what's the point?". In her class, 7 out of 28 returned and in my younger daughters class (grade 4), 5 out of 23 returned. They are doing well (most of the time) with online learning so yeah, for us, it was "what's the point?". Almost everyone we know is keeping their kids home with a couple of exceptions. For some of them it is definitely out of fear of the virus, for sure.

I am glad Ontario took the choice away from me. While my son flat out refuses to do anything, and so sending him would make sense, I am not sure I would feel comfortable with it. Also given his anxiety about leaving the house, I'm not sure how it would go. I am waiting to hear what the plans are for returning to schools in September, I really hope there are some in classroom options or my son will get even further behind, while he's a smart kid, he just isn't motivated. They were promised to be provided before the end of the school year (so before end of June).

I am glad we are getting some things opening up in bits and pieces, lets see how far we get before we go too far. Hopefully we don't I guess.

Same here with Ontario taking away the choice. I hate to admit it, but we've basically given up on the distance learning. It wasn't bad when my wife was off on short-term (different thing than COVID) since she was able to constantly remind them to get on their schoolwork throughout the day while I was working full time from the home office. But now that she's back to work, since I'm engaged full time, I can only really check in on them between conference calls and the followups to make sure what they're doing on their tablets is school and not games have been less and less.

Outside Greater Montreal and Joliette, schools re-opened May 11th. From what I saw on social from friends and cousins, kids and parents are happy. Back-to-school was voluntary and max 15 students/class but schooling is not optional so those who decided to stay home got assigned a new online teacher (teachers that couldn’t go back to work for health reasons or at-risk family members).

My kids (we live in Montreal) were supposed to go back on May 25 but that was cancelled because the conditions dictated by Public Health were not all met by that date and gvt didn’t think it was worth going back in June. Instead they have mandatory online classes with their teachers (minimum 3x/week but my oldest in Grade 5 it’s minimum 5x/week). Attendance is checked and can affect their semester grades apparently. Students with no access to a computer or tablet were loaned a chrome book by the school board and those without wifi received a data plan by Telus/gvt.

That's encouraging to hear. As of right now our schools are still closed and will remain closed until the September, and even then we do not have any word from our premier on if schools will reopen in the Fall. A handful of my friends have already decided to officially homeschool next year because they are convinced that the conditions in the schools will be so stressful that it won't be good for their kid to return to a regular classroom. We are taking a "wait and see" approach.

I haven't read through the 12 pages of responses, but for those whose provinces are back at school, how is it going?? How are the kids doing with the restrictions? How are the teachers handling things?

DS went back yesterday from 9-11 for Science 9, although he called me at 10:30 to say he was ready to go. There were 6 students in total in the class with some others via Zoom. High schools are only allowing 20% capacity so 6 seems like a correct amount. Although he did not need to go in for any academic reasons, it was good for him to get out of the house and interact with someone other than his parents! He said he wants to go back next Tuesday.

Tomorrow he will go again from 9-11 but for Socials 9. We'll see how this goes but I suspect it will be much like Tuesday's science class.

In class teaching ends on June 17, so he will have a max of 2 socials and 2 more science.

Ontario - My DS15 wants to go back to school. He hates that there are so many distractions at home. He's doing his work, even though he knows he's got a passing mark (based on pre-March marks). His teachers contacted me and we are making sure he gets the assignments done, partly for the opportunity to improve his mark, but also so he gets the learning. There's no point in hitting Grade 11 math next fall (or winter?) when he hasn't understood or even been taught Grade 10 math.

My DS17 seems to have it all roll off him, but he's really missing his friends, and he was shafted out of a grad and all the fun stuff that goes with it. He'd broken up with his girlfriend before the shutdown, and I think he might have reconciled, had they gone back to school, so he's missing that in his life, too. On top of it, his school was supposed to have the soccer 'dream team' this year (all top rep players from the area that happen to be at our school), so he's missing out on that sports championship. Then, to add insult to injury, they've said they'll do grad photos and a proper grad next fall. Well, he's off to another city for university. He will be in res and I can't see him wanting to come back for a grad. Maybe to see his friends, but I think he's missed out on it for good.

Do for my kids, I wish they'd have had a couple of weeks back at school, even if it was only for culminating and grad, but what can you do? Those Ontario numbers, while better than Quebec's, are just not where they need to be to prevent an upsurge.

I'm glad they let us know one way or another that Ontario schools won't open until the fall. We're concerned though that the lack of structure since March will make September that much more difficult in terms of retaining knowledge but we told DS that the week before school starts we'll be doing a review of the math and science concepts he needs for next year for at least 1 hour per day that week --- hopefully that along with the review they usually do it should help.

Thanks. I checked and even thought they are allowed to open, I know ours hasn't yet. They aren't prepared. I wonder if there are any movies released that they can get anyway? And how do you deal with the bathrooms, let alone the refreshment shop?

Don't quote me but I heard it is BYO refreshments (Pack a picnic) and take your own garbage home,,and there are outhouses with wash stations nearby.

Regards
Mel

Here's what I don't understand. How are outhouses with a handwash stand more sanitary (less apt to spread Covid) than a regular washroom? Just wondering.

Either way I would be hand sanitizing everything in sight. Personally I would think Depends sales will be going through the roof for people attending events like this.:P

Ok ,,lol.
Think back to roughing it camping.
Yeah,,,not quite my cup of tea either,,but kids seem to love the drive inn.

Our local drive in has stated that they are not ready to open yet. I personally wonder why the snack shack can't be open, since we are doing take out from our local restaurants all the time here. Washrooms could be a bit harder to monitor, but this article says it really isn't a big issue. https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coron...-during-a-pandemic-expert-weighs-in-1.4965907 And this one gives some advice when using a public washroom. https://www.thestar.com/news/canada...m-covid-19-while-using-a-public-washroom.html

I have fond memories of going to the drive-in with the family back when I was a kid, but by the mid 80's or so, they all had closed. Then a few years back one opened in Tilbury, but we haven't taken the kids yet. Due to the fact that the movies have to show at nighttime, and since this new one is only open during the summer months, their showtimes have all been really, really late at night.

Maybe this year will be the year we take advantage of it, once they get the ok to open. Despite the article posted above, the website/facebook/other social media of this place states that they haven't received their green light yet from the province. On the other hand, my son just mentioned the other day that he hasn't really been missing going to the movies.

The drive in near us, well it's really not that close? About an hour away. Any way, they are showing the new Trolls movie and something else kid friendly. The problem I have is the distance, gates open at 8, movie starts after 9, if you stay for both it's what, 1 AM before they are done? Then drive home an hour. I hate driving at night to begin with. I am sure it will be a popular event though. Have to stay in the car, bring in and out your own stuff, only one person to the bathroom at a time (though children can have an escort/supervisor). If they were closer I would take my son, though actually I'm not sure if he would enjoy it since he is not one to enjoy sitting still for a whole movie... he's far too restless for that.

Ok I’m going be opposite of most of you guys but I dread the end of the school year coming with nothing going on this summer. Schoolwork gives them something to do ( no matter how much I fight them on doing it) besides video games and whatnot while I’m at work .
it also gives the littles a link to the outside world with teachers commenting on their work and making weekly check in calls. They already feel isolated now, when this ends for summer not sure what the replacement will be. Sigh ..especially with my special needs little guy who is actually thriving at home not being in a class full of distractions)
My daughter 14 counted and every week we’d have 13-14 activities by now and now .. nothing .. I guess it’s different if your kids weren’t always in the run but no school on top of this will be a huge loss

I'm so jealous, you get hair salons. I was reading the original Ontario gameplan and those aren't likely to open until mid July here. I would take all of that and wear a mask if we could only get there.
No hairdressers in Ontario until July? Maybe I will cut my own hair before then... it is so hot and I miss my short hair! Shaved head, it will grow back right? Not the most important thing in the world. Just the one bugging me.
So I'm in BC and I got a hair cut today! And colour! Badly needed after 4 months (bye bye grey!) My girls also got hair cuts (I made sure they washed their hair at home last night so their time in the chair was minimized). It felt weird (wearing a mask and such, but I have a very comfortable one to wear) and also very familiar.
