I'm sorry but I have to do it.
In my daughter's school the 7th and 8th graders participate in science fair projects that are judged and then they go on to the regional science fair a few weeks after the school judging. The 8th graders also, at the same time science fair is going on, participate in the regional history fair. Since November these kids have been plugging away, coming up with topics (history fair actually started in October), beginning research, writing reference/note cards, writing the paper, for science fair coming up with a project to conduct and taking the amount of time needed to prove the project then writing a methods, doing a project board for both and doing several drafts of their papers. This year for history fair students got the chance to pick what they wanted to do - display board, paper, model, or media production. In the past they have had to do both a paper and a display board. My daughter decided to do a paper and a display board and it had to do with anything in the state's history.
For science fair she chose to do Plants Response to Musical Stimuli - she did her project using 8 african violet plants for 2 weeks. Two plants were the control plants, two plants she played rock music (Kiss), two plants she played children's music (Sesame Street), and the last two she played classical music (Gershwin). She had to map out how they plants growth happened between the different types of music - did the plants growth become stunted or did they thrive.
For history fair she chose a project on a coal mine disaster that happened in the early 1900's and we had a family member that worked in that particular mine. We went to the library in the community and did research one Saturday and then the next Sunday we attended the anniversary commemoration. She got to meet the person that has done a model of the mine and the author of the book she read. We then got to go and visit the mine site. Even though it is torn down there are two buildings still standing. We also were able to purchase a brick from one of the buildings that had been torn down. The money is used to keep the library preservations alive and help with the commemoration expenses.
I'm proud to say that although she is not going to regionals on her science fair project she did place 1st. The placings are Outstanding (go to regional) 1st, 2nd, and Honorable Mention. In history fair this past weekend she placed Superior on her paper and will be going to the state competition in May. Her project display did not place superior but we are hoping it did place Excellent or Good (everyone gets to place no matter what).
Then in the same week she was asked to help represent our school in a conference team spelling bee which will happen next week.
Needless to say - a lot has happened in our household over the past 4 months, all with a lot of headaches, yelling and tears, but very well worth every minute!!! I'm always very proud of her but I had to share my pride in her. She's a good kid!!!! Thanks for letting me go on and share in my happiness. (Yes, there was yelling - out of frustration that she was having and then I ended up having)
