protocol~returning phone calls

What is the proper protocol of returning phone calls? I always try at the very most 48 hours.

I try to do it as soon as I can. But.... 3 weeks ago, I got a call from one of my son's previous therapists asking how he's doing now (in speech) and I still haven't called!!! EEK. I keep meaning to. Time is just marching along!!
