My wife and I are booked on the Magic, 7-night western itinerary in Oct. We'd like to snorkel on our own at Cozumel and/or Grand Cayman. Problem: If we're both in the water, our "stuff" (including camera, passports, hats, sunglasses, room keys, wallets, etc.) is on the beach!!

How do seasoned cruisers handle security for personal items in this situation? Is there an obvious answer other than "get a waterproof case and take the 'stuff' in the water with you?"

Well, you can't protect everything you take to the beach with you, but you can take some precautions. The cheapest thing I've done was buy an "Aquapac" little pouch with a lanyard, and that holds my room keys, credit card, cash. My size holds just about those things, although I do believe they sell larger ones although that could get cumbersome. Last year, after wasting money on countless throwaway waterproof cameras and crappy pictures, I finally invested in a digital waterproof camera, the Olympus SW 7-something. I love it, and paid a little less than $200 for it. Goes under water 33 feet! Now that is the only camera I'll bring out to the pool/beach. I still have my better Canon camera for indoor/non-water pictures, but at least now I don't have to worry about ruining my Canon by the pool or having it stolen, since I can take the Olympus in the water with me! Lastly, I personally do not carry my passport with me to the beach on CC or any other island visited...I know this has been a debate on these boards in the past, some people agree with me and others say the whole point of having the passport is to have it with you at all times while abroad, so that is your call if you want to carry something that valuable with you to the beach, waterproof pouch or not.

I do not carry my passport--I make a copy of the first page and carry that while keeping the passport in the safe on the ship. As above, there are a variety of opinions on this. I agree with PP on a small "water wallet" that will hold just the bare essentials--room key, driver's license, small amount of cash on a lanyard type cord and into my swimsuit top! I take as little as possible with me. Cheap sunglasses (yes, I need prescription), DVC hats, old cover up that I wouldn't die if it walked off......

Some people get these lockable beach safes, or something like it

I can't post the link (don't have enouh posts yet) but if you google "lockable beach safe" that will give you some options.

We personally never worry to much about our stuff but we don't venture to far away from it either.

Here is the link:

We just ordered a few for our family - what a great idea and it actually holds my Casio Exilim digital camera as well as my phone/IPOD, ID, some money and a few cards!

What would you attach it to at CC? Your deck chair I guess?

Thanks for posting the link. That would be great for the beach as well as the public pool, etc. And the price isn't bad!

You're welcome, and no the price isn't bad. Ours came a couple of weeks ago, and they really are sturdy and well-made. Very easy to use.

We went to the indoor pool as it's still chilly (OK cold!) here and they do attach nicely to the metal part of a lounge chair.

I've been looking for something like this for a long time and was so happy when another poster put the link up.

Another thing about your post I noticed and would recommend is there are some outstanding private tours you can book in Grand Cayman. They have some great off shore reefs there. Probably the best snorkeling in the Caribbean IMO.
