Pros & Cons of using Trunkis as handluggage

So my dad has bought the boys a Trunki each for our trip to Disney. They have fallen in love with them and when my dad gave it to them he told them how they'd be able to ride them around the airport, which they've both latched on to.

However I'm worried about a few things...

1) They're quite big, if they're rummaging through them for thier stuff on the flight is it going to be chotic and stressful?

2) am I asking for trouble having a 5 1/2 year old and a 3 year old over excited on Trunkis at the airport.

We're seated at the bulkhead, so I think there wont be seats in front of us. So I suppose we could have one down at our feet to access them rather than having to constantly go to the over head bin.....but I just dont know.

we decided against it for our 2 year old twins as we wil have enough to worry about so two trunkis can stay at home

I think it would be ok.

If I had 2 children I would prefer those than giving them rucksacks or hand luggage. At least they can drag them without any heaviness. It also looks cute seeing kids around the airport with them:thumbsup2

Our boys had them on our last trip to NZ and they were great, providing they can sit and hold on and you don't try to go anywhere at speed, because they can tip if you try to turn really fast.

They don't hold as much as they look like they should though.

It helps keep them entertained at the airport and when they are tired helps with the sometimes long walk to the gate.

The aren't anymore annoying than other carry on for getting in and out of it. We always try and set them up with as much stuff as we can before departing so we don't have to get into their bags continuously through out the trip.

We borrowed one last time, and we have one, I am undecided about taking it this trip because I can't be bothered with the arguments between the boys on who gets to ride it.

Our (at the time) 4 year old loved hers when we went to Florida. I let her choose a couple of small toys to take but then I packed the Trunki with her toys and a few surprises to open throughout the flight. Our then 19 month old didn't have one but if we go away anywhere now I am going to have to invest in another because although they share it well enough at home I would want them to have one each if we were going on a long flight.

Regarding whether they will be over excited by them, I found that riding the Trunki (supervised by me or DH so as not to get in everyone elses way) was a great distraction from the boredom of waiting to board a flight.

My dd4 has one and has used it on every trip for the last 2 years. She loves it, she knows its holiday time when trunki comes out of the loft (he even has a sticker set so she changes his face each time we travel)

We find it useful as it gives her somewhere to sit in check in queues/immigration queues. It also keeps her moving she is a dordeller (sp) and it takes us ages to move 100yds but with trunki she loves pulling him along. If your kiddos do get bored with them, then the strap can go quite long and I just sling it across my shoulder.

They do fit in the overhead lockers and would be fine by your feet at the bulkhead during the flight.

My kids have been using them for a few years they are fab. They can get lots in them and they keep them entertained, my kids are now 5 & 3

Thanks for all the replies! You've restored my faith, I think we'll chance it. I'm one of those over organised people so I think i'm going to make sure things are very organised within the trunkis (in individual bags, containers etc) to help us stay tidy and organised while on the plane. :thumbsup2

My 3 and 5 year old love theirs, though the Trunkis might miss out the trip to Disney since I'm thinking of Boostapacks for them (boosters made by the Trunki people). We aren't planning to rent a car but may end up in a car once or twice since we're doing a family reunion of sorts and everyone else will be driving.

Anyway, my plan for the Trunkis, after years of travelling with at least one, is to use the bag Trunki makes to go inside it to hold all of the little stuff and toys they are likely to need on the flight. The rest of the space holds things like a change of clothes (in a bag) and a teddy, who then sits with the child on the plane. If you aren't sitting in the bulkhead, the bag that fits inside the Trunki fits neatly under the seat in front of you and holds everything together well. It also can clip on to the seat pocket on the back of the seat in front of you except for take off and landing, making for easy access.

Before we bought those, I still prefered putting things in bags as much as possible to stop them being dumped out everywhere when the Trunki is opened.

And yes, playing on a Trunki can be a great way to keep little ones entertained in the airport.

i have just looked up the Trunki tote and now I think that is a brilliant idea, and I think I have changed my mind and will buy one of those and take the Trunki, I might even buy a new trunki but I can also borrow one as well as friends have them.

I am wondering where we will be sat because I would like a bulk head cot for Ariana but I can't see them giving us four seats but maybe because we are flying into Miami the demand for those seats won't be as great.
