I thought it was too! I mean after all in our community are we all not accustomed to much more drama?


Seriously, I thought and still think it is an excellent discussion. No, we might not all agree on everything but we are all learning something about each other.

If you are referring to this particular sub-board (g/l) of the greater DIS, the web-masters and the DIS owner recognized that there was a growing number of posters without a place to post without fear of attack or otherwise negative, homophobic comments. At the time, the only appropriate area to post g/l questions was the Community Board. Nevertheless, when that happened, other (homophobic) members would see it as an opportunity to swoop down, prosletize and otherwise make most gay/lesbian posters either uncomfortable, thus keeping quiet and not posting, or argumentative and angry, thus participating in heated discourse. Although that number of uninviting, homophobic members were small (and ever dwindling as the days/weeks/months/years past), it still made for uncomfortable moments.

It was simply supply and demand.

There were some, albeit a tiny number, who protested the existence of the gay/lesbian board, but those comments were infrequent and are now pretty non-existent. The DIS overall has proven to be a pretty great place for all families, both traditional and otherwise. Nevertheless, the existence of this board is still going to remain because there has been and will continue to be a need to discuss Disney travel for the g/l/b/t community.

Not neccesarily for the FAQ but I would like to fill in a little history. Rick is correct it was quite obvious that the community board was not a comfortable place to post. We discussed this idea among the Webmasters and Pete decided to move forward with it. My personal feeling was "OH CRAP we should do this but this is going to be trouble". We spent quite a while looking for just the right moderators and I wouldn't start the board untill both Viki and Rick had passed my version of "basic training". They were the most thoroughly trained new mods we have ever had. I'm sure to this day they both think I'm completely paranoid!
Thankfully my fears were not realized. Viki, Rick and now Mike have done a brilliant job of heading trouble off. There really have not been a lot of issues with this board at all.
One other thing I would like to point out is that some policies are site wide. We do give the moderators of each board some autonomy but we do insist that certain rules are followed. If the mods are enforcing a certain rule that you disagree with always try to remember that it may be they are following board policy. Be nice to them!
