Proper etiquette for reuseable mug

Quick question we bought the resuable mugs last time and will be getting them again. My one question is when we used them last time for coffee in the a.m. that even after washing them they still had a coffee smell to them which was not the best for soda later. Would it be completely awful if we brought our reusable mugs to the QS to show we paid for them but put the coffee in our coffee travel mugs ? Or would the proper way be to fill the mug and transfer to metal mug ? I know this sounds crazy but the plastic just absorbs the coffee ...I could also soak them in the sink over night I guess.

I'm not going to comment on the mug use etiquette, but what you can do is buy the cheap O-cello sponges, soak them in water, then douse the sponge in dish sop. Let the sponge dry to hard. Then cut it up into small squares. Put the bunch of squares into a ziplock and bring on your trip. You can use each one as a disposable pre-soaped dish sponge to wash out your mugs each night.

I would try doing what you first suggested and asking a CM at the register. The worst they say is no, it must be first dispensed into the reusable mug, and then you have your answer.

Thanks ! I really dont want to seem tacky :) I just want to enjoy coffee and soda without an after taste. I really like the sponge idea. We used dish soap last time and a wash cloth but the roughness of the sponge might be more helpful.

I could be wrong because I haven’t stayed in a Disney resort since 2012, but I think they went to some kind of electronic system at the resort beverage stations that can read if you’re staying at that resort that day. Or maybe that’s only for soda? IDK but if this is the case, then you would need to dispense the coffee into a reusable mug first.

That is not how the rapid refill system works.

The soda machines have a sensor that reads an RFID chip in the cup or mug being filled with the drink. The RFID chip has to register as being valid or it won't fill. The chip is found in refillable mugs (which are valid for unlimited refills for a specified number of days) or in disposable cups (which are valid for a specified number of fills in a specific period of time), both sold at the location. There is an entire thread that explains how they work. Anyone can buy them and you do not have to be staying at the resort to purchase them.

The non-soda items like coffee, hot water for tea, and iced tea, do not have the RFID sensors.

IMHO proper etiquette would be wash it out and suck it up like the majority lol.
I've gone into the lobby bathroom before so I could use some hand soap and paper towels to wash it out better if the smell is really effecting the taste of the next drink.

Bounty has papertowels that have Dawn dishwashing soap imbeded in them. We cut them in half and then put them into a ziploc bag and toss them in our park bag. At the mug wash stations we take one out and use it to wash our mugs.

The only thing I dont like about them is the Dawn STINKS, so I usually use two freezer ziplocs. But it does the job of cleaning and is disposable.

Really? So what keeps people from just helping themselves to the coffee/tea/iced tea? I thought the RFID sensors were to prevent this.

So the OP can just dispense coffee directly into travel mugs, bypassing the middleman (aka refillable mugs), and use these for only soft drinks.

It only works with the pop machine. Pop is in high demand, not the coffee/tea/hot chocolate.

Yes correct. :)

I bring disposable cups for the coffee. I completely agree with you, once you put coffee in the Disney mug the scent never goes away. I also hate to carry around my mug all day. I like to grab a cup of coffee on my way to the bus in the mornings, disposable is just more convenient.

If you really feel uncomfortable, I'd place a disposable cup into the Disney mug while filling it. Then ditch the Disney mug.

No one has ever said a word to me. They could always scan my magic band and see I have a refillable mug assigned to me. They don't seem to care about the coffee.

I bring a baby bottle sponge/brush thingie and a travel-size bottle of dishwashing liquid. The bottle brush is just the right size to get down into the bottom of the mug but still has enough “spring” to the sponges to reach the sidewalls closer to the top, too.

Reusing the same cup for ten days with just a rinse kinda skeeves me out, so I give it a good wash every day or two.

I thought I was the only person who got skeeved out by this! Towards the end of our last trip I just gave up and started drinking Diet Coke in the mornings instead of coffee. Some good ideas about the cut up sponges though. Maybe bringing some disposable coffee cups would work too? Not sure if they would care seeing as how I'd have a refillable mug and they could see I paid for it.

I am with you OP. I thought I was the only one who was annoyed at this. I have thought of bringing an old refillable mug for my coffee and purchasing one for the soda and lemonade. Works out the same, still paying for a mug.

I usually wind up going to the bathroom sinks to wash it out with soap, but it still has a faint coffee scent. It needs to go through the dishwasher to get rid of it.

how do you get the refillable mugs? I know they come with the meal plans, but can you pick them up in the hotel lobby? What about if you go straight to the park if your check in isnt ready?
