I've always thought that the popular brand of sport sandals was pronounced "Teevas," with the 'e' having a long sound. However when I bought some from REI recently, the salesperson pronounced them "Tevvas," with the 'e' having a short sound. Does anyone know which is correct? For some reason the salesperson's pronunciation doesn't sound right to me...I will still probably pronounce them like "Teevas" anyway!!!! :teeth:

1. What is the meaning of Teva?

Teva is the Hebrew word for nature. It is pronounced "teh'-vah".

----
so the salesperson was correct (although most people call them "teevas"

My neighbor has worked for them for years. He, too, pronounces it teh-vah.

Wow learn something new every day on these boards. I thought it was TEEEEE vas too.

Tevas has a short 'e' sound, but most people say Teevas..long 'e'.

As long as the majority pronounces it that way, when referring to those sandals, I'll still pronounce it 'tee-vas'.::yes::

I say tea-vaz, literally what it sounds like when I say it.

Funny - I've never heard anyone say "tee-vas". I've always heard it pronounced Teh-vas. Kind of like Texas (sort of) :teeth:.

I never knew how to pronounce it either. Pretty cool that it is a Hebrew word!

I own three pairs. I guess that makes me a big time granola girl. :sunny:

I've been saying it alltogether wrong, I pronounce it "Tay-vuhs"
