Promotion question what to do?

I interviewed for an assistant manager job and I also met with HR. I was told that the starting pay for the Assistant manger job starts at less than what I'm making now. So they said they wouldn't be giving me much of a raise or any if I was offered the position. How can they do this? Why would I take a job that will be more hours and get paid the same or in theory less pay because more hours would equal less pay.

Not sure what to do I want the promotion but I think I should get something for the promotion

Any Advice?

It's called a lateral transfer, happens all the time. Although the position is more responsibility, the company is under no obligation to pay you more then they are willing to. If you've been in your position for a few years, you could be at the top of your pay range (grade) and the new position crosses your pay range (grade) and moves above. You also have to consider that there could be budget restrictions in place and they logistically cannot pay more then the amount offered or towards to lower end of the scale.

does the company do bonuses??
is there a max for your postion?? or leave/time off??

I would agree with Reddy's line of thinking. Evaluate if there are other benefits that make it worthwhile. If not then determine how much you want the position. If you only want it if it is more money then express your interest but advise you would need a salary increase of x dollars to take it. Just be prepared not to get the position if they don't agree.

I turned down a promotion because I would have lost money in the deal. the management staff was not happy and I didn't get a raise the next year but my reputation won out and I moved up over the next few years several times.

Good luck - and congrats for being considered!

I have to double check on the bonuses but it didn't sound like it. I do not get more vacation. I would get paid more for life ins, and disability payout. I'm not at the top of my current scale but I'm close.

Then there in lies your problem...you are attempting to move to a position that crosses your current scale. Nothing you can do about it. Personally, I'd probably take it, too long in one role is not good, and it opens more doors to future raises (if you're getting close to the top of your scale, they're won't be much room for raises).

Thanks!!! Its not completely about the money? But I guess I thought I would get something!! So just a little shocked more or less!! Just see what other dis'ers think!! I know I have to weigh it all out. There are pros and cons. We'll see what happens.

Thanks much for your advice!!! I just always thought I would get something of a raise so the shock of it is just that shock!!! Thanks a lot!! It's not completely about the money. So we will see how it rolls out!

I've had 3 of these promotions. You do it for the career path, not the money. My newest promotion (which is effective on Friday) is my first "raise" promotion. I will add, I never would have gotten this new position without the other positions. Sometimes, there is more to things than money. THink of future development and resume experience etc.
